To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SoLoMox Kanrnx, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Couches or Sofas, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates particularly to a combined couch and bed, or a combined sofa and bed; and the primary object is to provide a simple and cheap construction, which is thoroughly adapted to the purpose.

The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents an end elevational view of a couch-bed embodying the invention, the structure being shown in open condition; Fig. 2, a broken sectional view on a large scale, taken as indicated on line 2 of F ig. 1; Fig. 3, a broken sectional view illustrating the manner in which the bed sections are connected; Fig. 4, a broken detailed view of the brace employed for holding the seat in standing position; Fig. 5, a. view partly in section and partly in end elevation, showing the couch in closed condition; and Fig. (3. a section taken as indicated at line 6 of Fig. 1.

In the form illustrated, the structure comprises a base-box or frame A, having its front corners equipped with short standards or angle irons A: a rearwardly swinging seat B; and a folding bed C, mounted on the standards A.

The standards A. are firmly secured in the front corners of the box A. being spaced with relation to the end members 1 of the box by cleats 2. The upper ends of the standards project a short distance above the upper edge of the box.

The seat B has a frame 3, which is adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the box A when the structure is closed. The seat is connected with the rear portion of the box by hinges 4;. A folding brace, or braces 5, connects the frame of the seat with the box A. The spring 6 serves to hold thebrace in the straightened position when the seat is in the standing position. The lower front member of the brace 5 is provided with a shoulder 7, which abuts against the shoulder at the end of the upper member of the brace in the manner shown in Fig. 4, when the brace is straightened.

- The folding-bed C comprises a rear bed section 8, an intermediate spacing section 9, and a front section 10. The intermediate or spacing section 9 is connected by pivots 11, with short folding standards 12, whose lower ends are'connected, by pivots 13', with thenpper ends of the standards A. The short angle bars comprising the spacing section 9 are joined by a truss 1d. A wire fabric or flexible bed bottom 15 is stretched on the folding bed frame.

At each end of the bed is employed a pair of links 16 and 17, connected respectively with the pivot 11 and the pivot'13, the links approaching and being connected together by a pivot 18. The pivot 18 is connected, by a short link 19, to the adjacent end member of the outer. bed section 10; and a link 2O connects the link 19 with a corresponding leg 21 with which the outer bed section is provided.

The rear bed section 8 is supported in the elevated position by links 22, whose lower ends are connected by pivots 23, to the end members 1 of the box A. The rear upper ends of the links 22 are equipped with studs 24, slidable in the slits 25 with which the end members of the rear bed section 8 are provided. Links 26 connect the links 22' to the links 17; and springs 27 connect the intermediate bed section 9 with the rear portions of the links 26. The arms of the rear and front bed sections are connected with the intermediate section by pivots 28, as shown in Fig. 3. The joints are such as to afford abutting shoulders, as indicated at 29, when the bed is in eX- tended condition; and when the bed is folded, the ends of the members forming the intermediate bed section 9 afford shoulders 30, which engage the horizontal flanges of the arms of the bed sections 8 and 10, thus holding the folded sections of the bed in U form.

In the operation of opening the bed the members 12 are swung to a position above the pivots 13, the links 22 are caused to elevate the rear bed section, and the links 21 are extended through the medium of the links 20. It will be noted that the links 26 cause the links to raise the rear bed section and afterward afford connections between the front bed section and the rear bed section which serve to prevent collapse of the structure when the bed is occupied.

The structure described is simple, cheap, and well adapted to its purpose. The arrangement is such that when the bed is folded and the seat lowered, the frame of the seat will inclose the upper portions of the standards A and the upper (front) bed section.
