Be it known that I, ORRIN N. HILTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hatch-Box Cases; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in match box cases, my object being to provide a device adapted to recelve a box of matches and retain the same until the matches are used up, provision being made to allow the matches to automatically enter a forwardly located open portion where they are easily accessible for use. This device is preferably made of cardboard and from a single piece of material. The blank may be stamped out and formed into the completed case by bending the blank on folding'lines and connecting the various parts by inserting tongues or projections into slits formed in the said material. Hence the device is exceedingly simple and cheap, thus making it practicable for sale as an advertising novelty that may be given away with purchases of goods.

Have briefly outlined my improved construction, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

In this drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved match box case showing the device complete and ready for use. Fig. 2 shows a box of matches of the character adapted to be inserted in said case. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the case with the box of matches in place. Fig. 4 is a view of the blank completely extended. Fig. 5 is a front view of the case with the upright body part shaped to receive the box of matches, while the portion ofthe blank forming the lower part of the case is extended as shown in Fig. 4.

Let the numeral 5 designate the body of the case, which is composed of sides 6, a rear wall 7, and a front wall 8. The walls 6, 6 and 7 extend to the bottom of the case,

while the front wall terminates a short distance above the bottom to allow room underneath its lower edge for the matches to pass into the front protruding open portion 9 of the device. The lower portions of the sides 6 are provided with forwardly projecting parts 10 arranged to cooperate with side wings 12 extending upwardly from the bottom 13 of the box, these wings being bent on lines 14 of the blank (see Figs. 4 and 5). The parts 10 are proveded with angular slits 15 adapted to coincide with angular slits 16 formed in the parts 12 of the device, which are folded inside of the parts 10 in such a manner that the slits 15 and 16 register and are adapted to receive tongues 17 formed on opposite sides of the upwardly projecting front part 18 which closes the receptacle 9 in front. These tongues 17 are bent on folding lines 19 of the blank, and when the device is complete they occupy positions on the outside of the parts 10, the tongues 17 passing through the registering angular slits 15 and 16 of the members 10 and 12. The part of each tongue 17 which is uppermost when the device is assembled for use, is provided with a recess 20 forming a hook 21 adapted to project above the registering slits, whereby the parts 10, 12 and 18 are locked in their cotiperating assembled relation.

In forming the body of the box the blank is bent on lines 22, 23, 24 and 25, the parts between the lines 22 and 23 constituting one side 6 of the box; the parts between the lines 24 and 25 constituting the other side; and the parts between the lines 23 and 24 forming the front member 8 of the box.

Beyond the line 25 of the blank is a securing flap 26 terminating in a tongue 27 provided with a recess 28 forming a hook 29. This tongue is adapted to enter an angular slit 30 formed in the rear wall 7 of the case, the hook 29 projecting below the bottom of the slit 30, whereby the parts are locked in the assembled relation.

The upper extremity of the rear wall 7 of the device is provided with an extension 31 having a perforation 32 adapted to be employed in supporting the device upon a nail or other suitable fastening connected with the wall of the room where the article is located.

From the foregoing description the manner of assembling the parts of the blank will be readily understood. The blank may be first bent on the folding lines 22, 23, 24 and 25, and the tongue 27 inserted in the slit 30, hen this is done the parts 10 will project forwardly from the lower portions of the side walls 6. The tongues 17 are then bent on the folding lines 19 to a position forming right angles with the part 18, the latter being bent on the folding line 3% of the blank occupying a position at right angles to the bottom member 13. The tongues 17 will then overlap the projections 10 on the outside, and their forward extremities are inserted in the registering slits 15 and 16 of the parts 10 and 12, the

lilaving thus described my invention, what 1 claim is:

1. A match box case having a body member adapted to receive a box of matches inserted therein from the top, the front part of the body memberbeing cut away at the bottom, the device being provided wit-h a forwardly projecting body part open at the top into which the matches pass automatically from the box, the said case being formed from an integral piece of material,

the sides having forwardly projecting members at the bottom of the case, the bottom of the case having upwardly projecting and forwardly extending wings adapted to pass inside of the forwardly projecting members Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,

of the side walls of the case, the said wings and the forwardly projecting parts of the alls having registering slits forwardly of the front wall of the case, the forwardly projecting open member of the case having a front wall provided with rearwardly extending members having tongues adapted to enter the registering slits for securing the parts in the assembled position, substantially as described.

2. A. match box case formed from an integii'al piece of material bent on lines to form the body of the case, the device having a member forming a right angle with one of the side walls, the said member having a locking tongue, the rear wall of the case having a slit adapted to receive the said tongue, the side walls having projections extending forwardly from the front wall of the case, and the bottom of the case, having upwardly projecting wings extending forwardly from the front wall of the case, and cooperating with the said forwardly projecting parts, the wings and the said parts having registering slits, the front part of the device having an upwardly projecting wall cooperating with the said wings, and,

forwardly projecting side parts to form a receptacle in communication with the body of the case, the front wall of the said re ceptacle having tongues adapted to enter the registering slits of the wings and forwardly projecting side parts, substantially as described.
