, Be it known that I, EDWIN NEWELL OWENS, a citizen of the United States, and

. a resident of ichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented a new and. useful Improvement in Folding Paper Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in folding paper boxes, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.

An object of my invention is to provide 1 a device of the character described which is made from a single sheet of material and has means whereby it is locked in assembled position when once assembled.

A further object of my invention is to i, provide a device of the character described in which the sheet of material is folded so as to provide a box which has an extended top and base, whereby the device resembles a high grade box.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the cover is adapted to be locked in place when closed.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described in which portions of the device are extended inwardly into the box and are scalloped so as to provide a lace-like eifect to the box.

A. further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which has novel locking means, whereby the box is held in assembled position.

Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the as sembled box,

Figure 2 is a vertical section through the device,

Figure 3 is a development of the sheet of material used in forming the box, and

Figure 4 is a development of a modified form of the device.

In carrying out my invention, I provide a sheet of material such as'cardboard, paper, or the like, which is cut into the shape shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. It is obvious that this paper can be colored 1922. Serial No. 577,111.

or designed in different ways so as to provide boxes which have various designs thereon. The sheet 1 has a cover portion 2, and a base portion 3, which are connected to each other by a side portion 1.

The base portion 3 has integral extensions 5, 6, and 7. The extensions 4, 5, 6, and 7 are adapted to form the sides of the box when completed. These extensions are of the same height as the height of the completed box, and support the cover when the latter is in closed position. As clearly shown in Figure 1, the extensions 6 and 7 have locking tongues 8, which project laterally therefrom. These tongues are adapted to be inserted in slots 9, in the sides 1 and 5, and to thus hold the sides a, 5, 6, and 7 in vertical position. The tongues 8 are bent at right angles to the sides 6 and 7 along the lines 10. The sides 1 to 7 inclusive are bent along the lines 11, and also along the lines 12. The sides extend vertically from the lines 12, and cause the portions 13, between the lines 11 and 12, to rest on the base 3, and in this manner the box is provided with an extended base, as is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2. The ends of the portions 13 are beveled as at 14;, so as to abut each other u are folded at right angles to the sides along the lines 16, and when the box is in folded position, they extend inwardly into the box and closely resemble the lace in ordinary candy boxes. The sides 5, 6, and 7, also have elongated openings 17 therein, for a purpose hereinafter described.

-Thecover portion 2 has flaps 18 which are integral therewith, and which are adapted to project through the openings 17 when the cover is in closed position. The center flap 18 has cut-away portions 19 which are adapted to engage with the sides of the openings 17, and to lock the cover in closed position. In the same manner as the base 3 is provided with an extended portion, the cover 2 is also provided with an extended portion. The flaps 18 are also folded along the lines 20, and project at right angles to the cover. The cover has portions 21 disposed between the cover and the flaps, these portions being bent along the lines 22, and lying flat against the cover when in folded position. These portions 21 are also beveled at their ends, as at 22, so as to abut one another when in folded position.

From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof will be readily understood. .Yhen assembling the box, the sides 4 to 7 inclusive are bent alon the lines 12, so as to extend at right angles to the base 3. The portions 13 are also bent along the lines 11. and are adapted to lie over against the base 3, thereby providing the base with e2:- tended portions. The tongues 8 are then bent at right angles to the sides 6 and T, and are disposed in the slots 9. The tongues are disposed in slots 9 so as to have their ends project within the box, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and The lace portions are folded along the lines 16. and extend inwardly into the box. The cover portion is then folded along the lines and so as p to provide extended portions to the cover.

The flaps 18 are bent at right angles to the cover. and are adapted to enter the openings 17 when the cover'i's swung into closed po sition. As heretofore stated, the center flap 18 is locked in the opening 17 since the cut away portions 1.9 thereof provide projections which engage with the sides of the opening and thus securely hold the cover in closed position.

The assembled box closely resembles a high grade box. The box is cheaply made. and can be readily assembled. The locking tongues 8 provide a simple and novel means whereby the box-is held in assembled posh tion. The form of the box can be readily stamped out from a single sheet of n'iaterial. The box may be used for various articles. and with its extended top and base. makes a pleasing appearance to the e:

In Figure at. T have shown a modified form of the device. this form being identical to the form illustrated in Figure 3, except that the locking tongues 30 are carried by the sides 31 of the box instead of by the ends 32. The ends 32 in this instance have slots 33 which receive the tongues 30. In other words, this form of the device has the opposite sides provided with tongues, than the sides which are provided with tongues in the form illustated in Figure 3. The other portions of the device are identical to the form heretofore disclosed. and therefore need no further description. In a sembling this form of the device, the tongue are bent at right angles to the sides 31.. and are inserted in the slots 33. The tongues automaticall lock themselves to the sides 31 when disposed in the slots 33. and therefore hold the box in assembled position. This form of the box when assembled identical to the form heretofore described.

Although the box resembles a high grade I it can be cheaply manufactured since it is constructed from but a single sheet of material. which is so fashioned that when folded into assembled position. has interlocking features which hold the box in that position. The provision of the extended top and bare adds a novelty to the box which is not customary with folding boxes. The lace portions also make the box appear more high grade. The device is very simple in construction. and is durable and efficient for the purpose intended.

I claim:

A folding box made of a single piece of material comprising a base and sides. per tions connecting said sides to said base, said portions overlapping and abutting said llllffi, whereby said base extends beyond "the sides of said box, certain of said sides having lace portions at the free ends thereof. said sides having slots disposed adjacent to the lace portions. a cover extending from one of said sides. portions forming a part of said cover and being bent back so as to lie flat against the cover, said last named portions having locking flaps which project therefrom. said flaps adapted to enter said slots, and having notches adapted to receive the sides of said slots.
