MILK-CAN.
Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Milk-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to milk or cream cans, the object of the invention being to provide an outer metal jacket and an inner glass vessel which are connected with each other so that the vessel can be readily removed when it is desired to clean or sterilize the same and the outer jacket.
Another object of the invention is to pro- Vide in the construction of the outer jacket means whereby the inner glass vessel will be substantially entirely out of contact with the walls of the outer jacket and spaced sufiiciently therefrom to prevent breakage of the inner vessel in transit of the can.
Another object of the invention is to provide an efficient form of fastening device for connecting the separable port-ions of the Outer acket with each other.
In the drawings, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views:-Figure 1 is a vertical section through the can. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on an enlarged scale through the upper and lower sections of the can.
My improved can comprises a top section 1 and a bottom section 2. The bottom section is substantially of the same diameter throughout. A bottom member closes the lower end of the section 2, and as shown, this member comprises a spacing portion 3 which extends inwardly from the walls of the section 2, being formed with an outer attaching flange 4 and an inner substantially dished or cupped horizontal support 5 which is disposed below the plane of the. spacing portion 3. The section 2 is provided exte` riorly at its bottom with a reinforcing band 6. This band and the fiange 4 are secured together and to the walls of the section 2 by rivets or like fastening devices 7.
At the top the section 2 is provided with a lateral offset portion which forms a continuous circular seat or shoulder 8. From the shoulder 8, the walls of the section 2 are extended upwardly, as at 9, and slightly flared at 10 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. member 11 is secured to the lower section 2 of the jacket, and as illustrated, this member is formed with superimposed horizontal flanges 12 and 13 which are connected with each other` by a circular spacing portion 14, the flanges 12 and 13 serving to space the portion 14 from the vert-ical walls of the section 2. The flange 12 extends outwardly and is brought to bear against the seat 8v adjacent to the upper end of the lower section of the jacket and from this pointl of contact of the flange of the said lower section of the acket the spacing member is extended upwardly to form a reinforcing collar 15, the upper edge of the collar being curled over the flared portion 10 of t-he fiange 9, as at 11. The lower iiange 13 is preferably formed with a depending attaching portion 16 which is secured by rivet-s or the like .17 to the vertical walls of the lower section 2 of the jacket.
The top section 1 of the jacket is formed at its base to provide an outwardly extending horizontal fiange 18 which is adapted to be extended into contacting engagement with the flange 12 of the combined support and spacing member 11. The iange 12 has secured thereto on its underside a plurality of plates 19, preferably four in number, and as shown, each plate is formed with an upwardly extending threaded stem 20. The flange 18 at the base of the top section 1 is formed with suitable passages 21 which are adapted to receive t-he said stems 20, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Winged clamping nuts 22 are threadedly engaged with the stems 2O and they are adapted for adjustment whereby they may be brought securely into frictional contact with the flange 18 so as to hold the same securely confined against the said combined supporting and spacing member 11 of the lower section 2 of the jacket. Each nut is formed preferably with a continuous groove 23 in which is operatively mounted a ring 24. This ring is attached to a chain or suitable flexible connection 25 on the top section 1 of the jacket. By attaching the chain to the ring, as described, it will be readily understood that the nut can be conveniently adjusted on the stem. It will also be observed that this construction guards against loss of the nut when the upper section of the jacket is detached from the lower section.
The top section 1 is curved upwardly and inwardly from its point of contact with the combined supporting and spacing member 11 and at its upper end the top section is formed with a contacting portion 26 which bears against the top 27 of the glass jar or receptacle 28. On this engagement of the contacting portion 26 with the top of the jar the lower portion of the jar will be operatively seated in the dished or cupped portion of the bottom member of the lower section 2, thus operating to securely hold the jar against longitudinal movement in the jacket and to prevent the possible displacement of the bottom of the jar from the dished portion of the said bottom member.
The top section is formed with a central vtines the opening 28 is relatively short and it has secured thereto a collar 31, the outer end of the collar being disposed below the plane of the top of the neck 29 for a purpose to be hereinafter explained. The upper edge of the collar 8l is formed to provide a reinforcing bead 32. The neck of the jar is exteriorly threaded and it has fitted thereto a cover 33. The cover 34 is provided for the outer jacket or as a complete closure for the can, and as shown, it carries a flange 35 which is adapted to embrace the collar 81 and to frictionally contact with the same exteriorly. The jar 28 is graduated vertically, as at 36, so that the exact quantity of the contents of the jar may be readily determined. The cover 34: is preferably provided with an outwardly flared funnel-like portion 37, the Walls of which being formed to provide a continuous combined reinforcing and lifting bead 38.
Suitable handle attaching plates 39 are secured4 to the lower section of the jacket and mounted thereon are the pivoted handles 40. The ange 35 of the cover 34 is provided with a suitable eye or staple l2 which is located in such proximity with respect to a similar eye or staple L13 on the top .section l of the jacket so as to receive therewith a suitable seal, (not shown), whereby the cover can be securely located in position.
I claim A can comprising upper and lower .sections, a receptacle located in the can, a bottom member secured to the lower section and provided with a spacing portion for holding the walls of the receptacle spaced from the lower section of the can, the lower section of the can having an outwardly extending circular seat thereon at its upper end and having its walls extending upwardly beyond the seat, a spacer secured to the lower section of the can, the said spacer being substantially of U-form in cross section and having a portion bearing against the receptacle and disposed above the spacing portion of the bottom member, the said spacer having a horizontal portion bearing against the seat of the lower section and having a vertical portion secured to and embraced by the upwardly extending portion of the lower section adjacent to the said seat, a fiange formed on the lower end of the upper section and bearing against and disposed above the top wall of the said spacer, and relatively movable means connecting the spacer with the upper section and adapted to move the upper section and spacer relatively and into Jrictional contact with each other.V
