MILK-CAN.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LEONARD R. STEEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Milk-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to milk or cream cans, the object of the invention being to provide an outer metal jacket and an inner glass vessel which are connected with each other so that the vessel can be readily removed when it is desired to clean or sterilize the same and the outer jacket.
Another object of the invention is to provide in the construction of the outer jacket means whereby the inner glass vessel will be substantially entirely out of contact with the walls of the outer jacket and spaced sufliciently therefrom to prevent breakage of the inner vessel in transit of the can.
Another object of the invention is to provide an efficient form of fastening device for connecting the separable portions of the outer acket with each other.
In the drawings, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :-Figure 1 is a side View of my improved can. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough.
The can herein shown includes a metal jacket constructed preferably so as to provide a lower section 1 and a top section 2. The lower section is closed at its bottom by a bottom member 3 which preferably embodies a circular vertically disposed flange 4:, a horizontally disposed inwardly extending flange 5 and a central dished support 6 which is located below the plane of the flange 5, as shown, the flange 5 acting as a spacing portion to be hereinafter described. At the upper end, the walls of the lower section 1 are offset inwardly, as at 7, so as to provide a continuous circular concavity 9 in which the flange 10 of an attaching device 11 is seated, being secured to the offset portion 7 of the section 1 by rivets or other suitable fastening devices 12. The attaching device 11 is provided with a horizontal flange 13 which has formed integral therewith a vertical collar 14: which is disposed substantially in vertical alinement with the vertical walls 6 of the dished support 6.
The upper section 2 of the jacket is curved upwardly and inwardly so as to provide a Specification of Letters Patent.

contacting portion 15 which is adapted to bear against the top 16 of the jar or receptacle 17 so as to hold the bottom 18 of the jar in the dished portion of the bottom member 3. The top member 2 is formed with a central opening 19 which is defined by the flange 20 of the top section. This flange has secured thereto a circular protecting collar 21. The flange 20 and the collar 21 are spaced from the neck of the jar, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, so as to guard against breakage of the neck should the upper portion of the can become indented or otherwise damaged in transit. The neck of the jar is eXteriorly threaded and fitted thereto is a cover 23 which is provided preferably on its under surface with a paper disk 24. This disk protects the contents of the jar against coming in contact with any metal parts of the cover. The cover is provided with a suitable handle 25.
A main cover 26 is provided for the can, and as shown, it includes a depending flange 27 which is adapted to embrace and frictionally contact with the collar 21, the said flange 27 being wholly spaced from the neck of the jar by the said collar 21, as shown.
In order to provide means whereby the sections 1 and 2 of the acket can be removed to permit the jar 17 to be removed vertically, I provide the attaching device with a plurality of plates 28. These plates are suitably secured to the spacing flange 1a of the at taching device and they are provided with horizontally disposed threaded stems 29, each being headed, as at 30, at its outer end. These stems have adjustably mounted thereon winged clamping nuts 32. The depending walls of the section 2 of the jacket are formed with bayonet slots 33 which are adapted to receive the stems 29, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The section 2 may be adjusted with respect to the section 1 so as to cause the stems 29 to be extended in the horizontal portions 34 of the bayonet slots, after which, the clamping nuts 32 can be adjusted on the stems so as to bear against the depending walls of the section 2. In this manner the sections 1 and 2 may be securely connected with each other. The heads 30 on the stems 29 act as stops to limit the adjustment of the winged nuts in one direction and to thereby prevent displacement of the nuts from the stems. The upper end of the lower section 1 has its walls embraced by a reinforcing band 35.
The upper edge of the collar'21 is disposed below the plane of the top of the neck of the jar so as to prevent the contents'of the jar from coming in contact with any metal part of the jacket when the can is canted for the purpose .of pouring its contents. The lower section 1 of the jacket is provided with attaching plates 36 on which'are mount-ed suitable lifting handles 37 The bottom of the lower section '1 has its xwallsembraced and reinforced @by a *band138.

Should the jar become broken the sections 1 and 2 of the jacket may be disconnected fromreaeh other on the proper adjustmentof the nuts 32and the -stems'29 and the: jar'can then'be-conveniently exposed forremoval. The flange 27 of the cover 26 is provided with a suitable staple or eye 39 which is-located in such proximity with respect to astaple or eye 40 on the section 2 of the jacket so as to receive therewith a suitable seal which may be provided for the purpose of'holding the cover 26 securely locked on the jacket.
:I claim A can comprising upper and lower sections, a bottom member closing the lower sect-ion and provided with a central depressed portion, a member secured to the lower section and offset inwardly, thesaid oflset portion includinga vertical collar, a receptacle reinovably mounted in the can and embraced by said collar and held thereby with its walls spaced from the walls of the said upper and lower sections of the can, the'upper section of the can'having a portion bearing against the receptacle so as to hold the bottom of the receptacle confined in the said central depressed portion of the bottom member, and fastening devices carried by the collar and having detachable engagement with the upper section of the can.
