WITNESSES: [N VENTOR.

RICHARD AUSTIN, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO MACDONALD MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, LIMITED, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
COVER-FASTENER FOR METAL FAILS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD AUSTIN, of the city of Toronto, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover-Fasteners for Metal Pails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to the tinned pails commonly employed to contain lard and the like and my object is to devise cheap readily attachable means whereby the pail lids may be fastened down when filled pails are to be shipped.
' I attain my object by means of sheet metal clips each having a circular hole formed therein adapted to fit on the rounded ear bosses of the pail and provided with a projecting tongue. An integral offset keeper is formed on the flange of the cover around which the upwardly projecting tongue of the clip is bent substantially as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of a pail provided with my cover fasteners. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of part of the pail and cover with the fastener in position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener. Fig. 4: is a vertical section of the same.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the diflerent figures.
A represents an ordinary lard pail of which B is the .oover provided with the usual flange C. The fastener is stamped out of sheet metal to form the annular body D and the tongue E. The body is dished so that when placed in position on one of the ear bosses F it may fit snugly over the rounded base a of the boss. The tongue E is offset somewhat as shown so that when in position on the pail it will pass the head I) usually formed toward the upper rim of the pail at the point to which the flange C eX- tends. The keepers G are formed on the flange C at each side so situated that they may be brought into alinement with the bosses F. These keepers are preferably formed by slitting the flange of the pail parallel to its lower edge and offsetting the metal below said slit to form a strap like member so that the upwardly projecting tongues of the fasteners will pass up through Specification of Letters Patent.

the slits back of said keepers, as shown. To fasten the cover in place the ends of the tongues are bent down over said keepers, as shown at the left hand in Fig. 1, securely locking the cover in position.
The fasteners are so made that they form a tight fit on the ear bosses F and will thus hold their places until the keepers on the cover have been engaged with them as aforesaid. At the same time as they are loose pieces and not connected with the pail they may be kept on hand and only used when it is desired to lock the cover in place.
This device it will be seen is exceedingly cheap, as the amount of material and labor required in forming the fasteners is eXceedingly small. At the same time the device is very effective and satisfactorily answers the purpose for which it is intended.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination of a pail provided with ear bosses; a flanged cover having a strap-shaped keeper formed at each side of the flange in alinement with the ear bosses; and sheet metal fastening clips each having a hole therein whereby it may be detachably fitted on one of the ear bosses and provided with a tongue adapted to pass through and be bent over the adjacent keeper.
2. The combination of a pail provided with ear bosses; a flanged cover having a keeper formed at each side of the flange in alinement with the ear bosses by slitting the flange parallel to its lower edge and off setting the metal below said slit; and sheet metal fastening clips each having a hole therein whereby it may be detachably fitted on one of the ear bosses and provided with an outwardly offset tongue adapted to pass through and be bent over the adjacent keeper.
3. The combination of a pail provided with ear bosses; a flanged cover having a keeper formed at each side of the flange in alinement with the ear bosses and sheet metal fastening clips each having a dished body portion with a hole therein whereby it may be detachably fitted on one of the ear bosses and provided with a tongue adapted to pass through and be bent over the adjacent keeper.
4. The combination of a pail provided with ear bosses; a flanged cover having a keeper formed at each side of the flange in alinelnent with the ear bosses by slitting the offset tongue adapted to pass through and flange parallel to its lower edge and offbe bent over the adjacent keeper.
Toronto, this 7th day of October 1910.
