PAPER' BOX.
Specication-of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 6, 1908.A
Application med December 15,1906. sereine. 347,957.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that'I, EDWARD K. LATIIROP, a citizen of the United States, ,residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and. State ofMassachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of n quite. I
' Wlth these and other objects 1n vlew, the lnventlon comprlses the nov-el features of v construction and combination' of parts more released lfor removal when circumstances refully'hereinafter described andparticularly posed of a length of po1nted out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Fi ure 1 is I a perspective view of a box equippe( with a `fastener embodying the invention. i Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken centrally and longitu`` dinally through thebox.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a ox composed of paper or other material and of any preferred form having a cover'2 provided with a depending fiange 3 adapted. to seat downward on. the box as usual in devices of this class.
The cover v2 is, in accordance with the invention, secured in place by means of a pair .of fastening devices identical in -form and each comprising, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, a primary member 4 and an auxiliaryjmember 5, of which the primary member, hereinafter termed the locking me ber, is compose-1l of sheet metal in the form of a disk provided with an opening 6 and having at its lower yedge a projecting portion or tongue 7 bent to form an engaging hook which.l is entered through an opening or slot in the e'nd wall of the box', while qthe member 5,. hereinafter termed the keeper, is inlike anner`com. sheet 1n al bentinto substantiallyv S-shape to form an .engaging portion or hook S entered through an', open- Ing in the end portion of flange 3 and. a-secr ond engagingportionor hook. 9', which is,enf l `endwall'of t .ing in the end wardly'so as to Witnesses:
tered through the opening 6, and folded into secure engagement with the member 4, it being noted inthis connection that the end portion 10 of the hook 7 is bent to stand at anu ward and outward inclination relative to t e iinner face of the'endwall of the box, thus permitting free movement of the mem-ber 4 relative to said wall for entering the hooked portion 9 of the keeper through theopening 6 in effecting cooperating engagement of the parts 'of the fastening member. A
Inpractice, the locking member 4fv is en'- gaged with the body of the box by enterin the hook 7 through the endwall thereof'an' the'keepe'r member 5 in like manner engaged with the cover by entering the hook 8 -through the'end portionof flange 3 and after .arrangl ing 'the `cover in-place. on the box the ho'o l keepers are inserted through portions 9 ofthe the'open-ings inthe companion members 4 andinally bent ,to secureengaging position. When it is desired to remove the cover the hooks 9` are bent outward and freed' from the,-
l openings 6 by rocking thepa'rtsi outwardly zrelati'veto the end wallsof the box. Having vthus described my invention, what Iclaim is: v
, A fastenin for paper boxes comprising the e box with an 4 a lflanged cover also having an opening in one end, a' strip of sheet-metal having one endinserted through the openingof'the cover and bent in contact of the flange of the same, a locking member .havingaii' enlarged lopening therein and also ase portion, lsaid-'tongue being inserted through the open-' wall of the box and bent up provided with `a tongue on its b be outzof contact with the in n er face of the ing member having an outward lateral Inovement 'in said openingin saidend ofthe box, and said stri `having its outer portion inserted throng vthe'enlarged openingV of said locking device wardly in hook form, vsubstantially 'as' djescribed.
In testimony whereof, I affix my .signature in presence of-tw'o witnesses...
, EDWARD K. LATHROP.
