MOP-HEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.Patented A110. 22, 1911.
Application filed February 20, 1911. Serial N o. 609,701.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that l, ALEXANDER Laciinr, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop-Heads; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in mop heads.
One object of the invention is to improve and simplit'y the construction oil the mop heads shown in United States Patent No. 965,546, granted July 26, 1910, whereby a stronger, more durable, and eilicient head is provided for attaching the mop material to the handle.
lith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel t'eatures of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
ln the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mop provided with a head constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective View of the mop head and lower end ot' the handle; Fig. 3 is a plan view ot' the blank from which the head is formed.
Referring .more particularly to the drawings, l denotes the handle of the mop. To the lower end of the handle is secured my improved mop head Q. The head 2 is pret erably stamped from a single sheet ot' metal plate 3 of rectangular form. The plate 3 is provided near its opposite ends with transverse slits l which extend parallel with the ends of the plate and are connected by a centrally disposed longitudinal slit 5. VBetween the slits l and on opposite sides o'l the slit 5 are formel tabs G which are adapted to be bent upwardly and are concaved or curved transversely to 'form handle gripping niembers adapted to be engaged with the end ot the handle as shown. The opposite end portions ot the plate 3 are bent downwardly or outwardly and form the sides 7 of the mop head. rl`he portion ol the plate above the tabs or handle gripping members and between the ends ol the sides 7 ci the head are bent inwardly as shown at 8 and engage the opposite sides ol the handle below the tabs (3. The inwardly bent or curved parts 8 form recesses at the opposite ends of the head into which and between the side plates 7, the mop material is drawn and secured by a binding wire or bail t). '.lhe bail S) is preferably in the 'form ot a wire rod which is inserted thrmlgh a transverse passage l0 in the handle immediately above the inner ends ol the tabs (l and is passed around through the looped inner portion of the mop material and has its ends looped together as shown at ll. lhe mop material when thus engaged by the bail is drawn up between the sides 7 and into the recesses at the ends of the head and securely fastened to the handle. The bail E) when arranged as shown and described also serves to securely hold the head 2 on the end ot' the handle. '.lhe head 2 while primarily provided to receive the looped inner portion of the mop cords or material also serves as a ierrule or socket tor the end el the handle whereby said end is protected and prevented from being split. The tongues (3 which form the 'fer-rule or socket may be bent inwardly or outwardly to adjust or vary the size olI the socket to lit handles ol dillerent sizes. lVhile the head is herein, described as being stamped from sheet metal it is obvious that the same may be foi-uuid 'from cast metal or constructed in any suitable manner.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the torni, proportion and the minor details ot construction may be resorted to without departing 'lrom theprinciple or sacrificing any ot the :u'lvantages ot this invention, as delined in the appended claim.
llaving thus described my invention, what I claim is A. mop head comprising spaced plates adapted to be disposed on opposite sides of In testimony whereof I have hereunto set the handle and to project beyond the end my hand in presence of two subscribing Witand sides thereof7 plates connecting the ends nesses.
of said first named plates and curved in- ALEXANDER LACKEY. Wardly to abut opposite sides of the handle, Witnesses:
and tabs extending from the Connecting AN NIE MARIE KRAMER,
plates to embrace the handle above the same. MAY DELL BEHAN.
