ASSIGNORS TO NEW YORK STAB/[PING COMPANY, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A

CURRZCOMB.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, Renner F. Sirmione and CHARLES FRANCISCO, citizens et the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of lings and State of New York, have i` vented a certain new and useful lmprovement in Currycombs, el' which the lollowing is a full, clear, and enact description.
The p 'imary object of the invention is to provide convenient means lior permanently attaching flexible handles to the metallic backs ot currycombs, but the invention is not limited to its use in connection with any particular construction of handle or currycomb, or to currycoinbs only. Generally such handles have been applied by means oit rivets, although other attaching means have been proposed.
ln the present illustration of the invention the metal baclr of a currycomb is provided with oppesitely arranged tongues or tlams, which ar-e formed integral with the back, leaving openings in the back through which the ends of the handle are passed, and then t-hese tongues or lams are pressed baci: so as to grip the ends oi' the handle between themselves and the adjacent por tions ol' the bach; and to further insure the security oil' the fastenings, the edges of the tongues or llams may be provided with projections, leaving cca-responding` notches in the adjacent edge from which the tongues or l'lams are cut, and which projections and notches cooperate to grip the ends of the handle and thus lirmly secure it in place, as we will proceed now to explain and linally claim.
ln the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, in the several igures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure l is a top plan view, with one end of the handle broken away so as to expose the tongue or ilam construction, and showing the invention applied to a metallic currycomb. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view. Fig. 3 is a central cross-section taken through the handle. Fig. a is a perspective View illustrating the peculiar construction of a preferred form of teeth.
1We will proceed now to explain our invention in detail as applied to one Jform oi currycoinb, and in this construction the currycomh is made up of a back l, having its rim Q made as a corrugated flange, the

edge of which forms the teeth, some of the teeth, as 3, inclining one way, and others, as 4l, mclining in the opposite way, as indicated in Fig. Ll, so as to insure a more thorough combing of the animal. Nested within this {lang-ed back are similar' concentric cup-shaped pieces o and 6, provided with similar toothed edges, and secured within the bach and one within the other, as indicated more particularly in Figs. 2 and 3, by means of rivets 7.
The back is n'ovided with oppositely ar ranged slits S cut lengthwise of the bach, and pairs of parallel slits 9 extending at right angles from the slits S so as to leave flexible tongues or llanos l() which as herein shown are turned inwardly, thus leaving slots through which the ends of the leather .strap ll bowed over the back are passed, and then the tongues or liams are bent back toward the original level of the back of the currycomb, thus narrowing the slots and pinching and permanently holding the ends et the handle between the adjacent edges of the slits, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3. To increase the holding efficiency of these llams, they may be made with projections l2 of any sort, here shown as pointed prongs, and the formation el these projections leaves corresponding notches 123 in the adjacent edges of the slits, so that as the tongues or llams are forced or bent bach te grip the ends or the strap, the material. ot the handle is crimped in between the projections on the tongues or llains and the notches and thus an additional security is a'l'llorded in the attachment et the handle.
By the construction described a very simple and eiiicient handle attaching medium is all'orded, and one that may be economically made and used.
As already stated, the invention is designed primarily ifor the attachment ci leather straps to the metal backs or currycombs, but obviously the handle-attaching means may be applied to other devices than currycombs where useful or available, and the claims herein made are to be so understood. lt is also within the invention to make the. projections l2 on the opposite edge ot the slit S and the complemental notches in the tongue or tlam.
rllhe formation of the tongues or lams may be modified to suit the term and material ot' the handle; the gist of the invention being in the provision of handle-attaching' means integral with the back of the article and obviating the necessity of using rivets and other extraneous or applied fastenings. The shape and number of the projections and the corresponding notches and their location may be altered as desired, and indeed the projections and notches may be omitted altogether.
Vfhat we claim is 1. A currycomb, of substantially the construction described, having a metal back provid-ed with slits and adjacent integral flexible tongues or iiams bent away from the level of the metal ot the back coincidently with said slits to form slots 'n said bacl7 and a handle having its ends passed through said slots, said tongues or tlams being bent back toward the level of the metal of the back to narrow the slots and thereby pinch and permanently hold the ends of the handle in the slots by and between the adjacent edges of the tongues or flams and the metal of the back.
2. A currycomb, comprising a series of comb members, and a back formed iiritegrally7 with one of said comb members and having a pair of lleXible tongues or flams cut from and bent beyond the level of said back and forming openings upon opposite sides of the back, and a handle bowed over said back and having its ends passed through said openings, said tongues or flains being bent back toward the level of the back to pinch and permanently hold the handle in said openings.
n testimony whereof we. have hereunto set our hands this 11th day of January A. D. 1913.
