UMBRELLA-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1914.
Application filed January 10, 1914. Serial No. 811,408.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY J. Bnn'rejnn'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of l/Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Supports, of which the following is a speciiica tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in umbrella supports and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with various vehicles whereby the driver or other occupant may be effectively protected; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character of a novel and improved construction whereby the same may be applied with convenience and facility to 0perative position and afford a firm and secure support for the umbrella.
The invention consists in the details of construction and. in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved umbrella support whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I willnow proceed to die scribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1. is a view in side elevation, partly in section, of a support constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention: Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of the device as disclosed in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view in top plan; and Fig. t is a sectional view taken through the base of the body, with the upper barrel removed and illustrating in detail certain of the features herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the body member substan tially U-shaped in form, the arms 22 of which being adapted to bridge or straddle a convenient part or element of the vehicle to which it is adapted to be applied and is maintained against displacement through the medium of the clamping screw 3, herein disclosed as threaded through the lowermost of such arms 2. \Vhile the upper arm 2, in alinement with the screw 3, provided with the block or lip 4 having its free face serrated or otherwise roughened to assure a proper and effective gripping or clamping action. The lower arm 2 projects forwardly, as at 5, of the base 6 of the body 1 and has rested thereupon the annular sleeve or barrel 7 adapted to receive the lower extremity of the umbrella handle. The handle of the umbrella is also adapted to be directed between the sleeve or barrel 8 carried by the upper portion of the base 6, such upper portion of the base being provided with the convexed longitudinally directed recess 9 adapted to accommodate the adjacent wall of the barrel or sleeve 8, whereby it will be observed that a more effective connection between the barrcl 8 and the base 6 may be created. The sleeve or barrel 8 is split longitudinally so that it may be compressed to assure proper clamping engagement with the handle of the umbrella and, as herein disclosed, the clamping action is created through the medium of the spaced alined perforate cars 10 projecting from the edges afforded by the split 11 of the ring or barrel 8 and in threaded engagement with which is the screw 12 capable of operation in a manner which is believed to be self-evident to those skilled in the art to which my present invention appertains.
From the foregoing description, it will be obvious that an umbrella support constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be applied into operative position and by reason of the security with which the umbrella may be maintained in requisite position and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice;
Having thus fully described my invention what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent, is:
A device of the character described including a body substantially U shapcd in form the arms whereof being provided with clamping means, one of the arms of the body being projected forwardly thereof, a barrel positioned upon the extended portion of the arm, a longitudinally split barrel car- 5 ried by the base of the body in a-linement with the barrel on the extension, the longitudinal marginal portions of the second barrel afforded by the split being provided with means for expanding or contracting the split 10 barrel, the upper portion of the base of the body being provided with a convexed longitudinally directed recess in which the adjacent wall of the split barrel is adapted to be accommodated.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my 15 signature in the presence of witnesses.
HARRY J. BURTGHETT.
