Description
A. D. ALEXANDER. ME FOR HOLDING PISTONS AND CAPS.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.5, l9l9- Patented Mar. 29, 1921.
ALBERT D. ALEXANDER,
VISE
0F FREDERICKSBURG, VIRGINIA.
FOB HOLDING PESTONS AND CAPS.
Application filed August 5, 1919.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that l, ALBERT citizen of the United States, residing at ricksburg, in the county of Spottsyl- Vania and State of Virginia, have invented cci new and useful Improvements in Vises for Holding Pistons and Caps, of
l the following is a specification.
invention relates to a clamping or holc'u device in the nature of a vise, for use in holding pistons and also caps when it is desired to operate upon the same, such as cleaning, or otherwise, as desired. The object of the invention is to so con struct the same, that it will be durable, strong, may be easily and cheaply manufactured, and will be simple and efficient in operation.
YJith these and other objects in view, my invention consists of receiving means for the piston or caps, as desired, which 1 have illustrated in the claims and described in the specification.
in the drawings forming a part of the specification and in which like symbols of reference represent corresponding parts in the several views ure 1 is a perspective view of my or vise, showing the piston in dotted on the same;
in: 2 is a plan view of the device; and,
1 3 is a front view of the vise, showing a cat in dotted lines on the same.
The numerals 1 and 2 represent the portions of the vise forming its base; 3 perforations formed in the same for the purpose of connecting it to a support; a is the ring for clamping the piston, or article to be operated upon, the same being formed integral with the portions 1 and 2; and 5 shows the opening or division between the sections to permit contraction. or compression of the same.
6 is a screw connected to the part 1 of the vise and extending through a bearing 16 in part 2 of the same; and 7 is a screw cap on the screw for operating in connection with the same. 8 is a perforation in the cap, and

9 a bar in the same, by means of which the cap may be revolved and the vise contracted to grip the article being operated upon. 10 represents the piston being operated upon.
11 are studs rising from the sections 1 and 2, and having reduced portions 12 and 13, the object being to receive and hold a cap or similar article 14;, as shown in Fig. 3, when it is necessary to file or otherwise treat the same. is an enlargement 15, forming a rest for article being operated upon.
Thus it will be seen that a piston may be placed within the ring, as shown; or a cap placed on the studs, and by the simple manipulation of the screw-cap 7 may be securely and tightly gripped, and any work upon the same be done with ease and effect. I'aving now fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
A. device of the character described, consisting of a ring having free ends terminating in integral base portions, a screw connected to one section of the base portion, a bearing in the other base portion in which the screw operates, and a screw-cap on the screw for compressing the ring and base parts.
2. In a vise, annulus to receive a piston and studs to receive a cap, said vise having free ends, and means to contract said ends to clamp the articles operated upon.
i1 vise, consisting of an annulus having an angular base portion connected to the same, said base portion being divided, perforations in the base portion to connect it to a support, and a screw in the base portion for contracting and holding the said sections.
1. A vise, consisting of portions forming a ring to receive an article and studs to receive a cap, a screw extending through the sections, and means for operating the screw to contract or expand the vise.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ALBERT D. ALEXANDER.
