Edward G. Lurch @VWW COLUMBIA PMNOGRAPH Co UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
EDWARD C. LURCI-I, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMB.
0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. LURCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of l/Vestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toilet articles and has special reference to a novel haircombing device.
One object of the invention is to provide improved means for smoothing the hair during the combing operation. 1
A second object of the invention is to provide improved means to prevent the hair from curling backward between thecomb teeth.
A third object of the invention is to provide a handle for such a comb.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed. 7
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :Figure 1 is a perspective of one form of the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section showing the rollers and their bearings. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2 and showing the device in use. Fig. 4 is a cross section similar to Fig. 3 but showing a modification using a single roller. Fig. 5 is a section similar to Fig. 3 but with the comb removed from the hair.
In carrying out the objects of this invention there is provided a comb having a back 10 and at each end of this back are the broad end teeth 11 between which are located the smaller teeth 12. Secured to these broad end teeth are brackets 13 which are provided with suitable openings to receive the journal 14: of one or more rollers 15. These brackets are located intermediate the width of the comb so that the rollers have the points of the teeth projecting beyond them when in use. Secured to the comb back is a forked member 16 to which is secured a handle 17 so that the same may be grasped without interfering with the rollers.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 27, 1913.

Serial No. 751,084.
Then the comb is to be used for short hair, such as mans hair, it is found preferable to use two rollers but when the comb is used for long hair the form shown in Fig. 4 with one roller is preferable.
It is to be noted that the ends of the roll ers are so arranged as to leave spaces 19 between them and the brackets so that strands of hair will not be caught and torn out.
In use when short hair is being combed the comb is held in the position shown in Fig. 3 so that the teeth project into the hair and the rollers smooth it down upon the scalp. When longer hair is being combed it is preferable to hold the comb at the angle shown in Fig. 4-, even though the form shown in Fig. 3 is used. When this latter form is used the under roller smooths the hair down closely while the upper roller prevents it from curling over the comb back.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and of the character specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. The combination with a hair comb, of
a roll revolubly mounted on the comb and extending along the side thereof. 2. The combination with a hair comb provided with teeth, of a smooth surfaced roll revolubly mounted on said comb extending longitudinally along the side thereof and intermediate of the space occupied by said teeth.
3. The combination with a hair comb having a back and teeth, of rolls revolubly mounted on opposite sides of said teeth extending over the space thereby occupied and spaced equally from the back.
4. The combination with a hair comb provided with a back, and teeth, and intermediate teeth; of journal brackets carried by said end teeth, and a roller provided with journals rotatably mounted in said brackets.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD C. LUR-GH.
