To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MAX SCHNEIDER and.
CLARA Gr. SCHNEmER, the said MAX SCHNEI- DER being a subject of the King of Germany and the said CLARA SCHNEIDER being a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in .,.Spraying Devices; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in spraying devices in which a receptacle con-- taming a poisonous liquid adapted to kill germs or vermin injurious to trees or shrubbery, may be automatically mingled with the Water in spraying capable garden hose.
The receptacle containing the poisonous liquid or chemical is mounted on the nozzle in such a manner that as the Water from the hose passes through the nozzle, an auxiliary passage which is in communication with the said receptacle is surrounded by the issuing stream of water which serves to convert the proper proportion duringv the operation, our improvement being 0 attachment to an ordinary poisonous liquid into a spray which is thoroughly mingled with the water forming a homogeneous mixture which may be delivered to the trees, shrubbery or other vegetation in such quantities as may be desired, regulating the escape of the poisonous liquid whereby the quantity of the'latter' used is properly proportioned to the water passing through the nozzle. Provision is also made for pivotally connecting the said receptacle with the nozzle in such a manner that the receptacle is automatically maintained in an upright or vertical position regardless of the position of the hose nozzle when the device is in operation, the proper counterbalancing of the receptacle being accomplished by means of a weight of sufficient mass to support the receptacle in a sufliciently stable condition.

et the numeral 5 designate the hose and nozzle attached thereto, the said nozzle provided with a main passage 7 trally located interior auxiliary member 8 having a relatively small passage 9,'the said member 8 projecting through an opening 10 formed in a cap 12 applied to the threaded body portion 13 of the nozzle. The centrally located member 8 tapers toward its outer extremity 14 which extends a short distance beyond. the perforation 10 in the cap of the nozzle. As this cap is screwed inwardly, or toward the hose, the perfora' tion 10 through which the water'issues is gradually contracted, thus diminishing the flow of water. It is evident that the movement of the cap in the opposite direction will have the opposite effect, that is, to increase the flow of water throughthe nozzle. The member .8 of the nozzle has an abrupt turn at its inner extremity as shown at 15 and its passage registers with an opening 16 formed in the side of-the body of the nozzle, the latter being exteriorly equipped with a threaded nipple 17 upon which is screwed a cylindrical boss 18 having a cavity 19 into which is fitted a nipple '20 with which the cone-shaped lower ortion 21 of the receptacle 22' is provided? The passage of the liquid through the nipple 20 from the receptacle 22 is regulated by a needle valve 23' connected with the lower extremity of the stem 2/]: upon which is mounted an adjustable stop 25, the said stop being connected with the stem by a set screw 26. Surrounding. the stem above the stop, is a spiral spring 27 whose lower extremity engages said stop and whose upper extremity bears against a cross piece 28 The same reference characters indicate through which the water passes, and a cen- 21, the stem is lifted against the tension of tacle and graduated as a guide to the operator in regulating the escape of liquid from the receptacle in order to properly propor-' tion the same to the passage of water through the nozzle. As the knob and stem are turned in one direction, the pointer moves. upwardly on the notched inclined edge-andtemporarily maintains the stem in the proper position of adjustment. As the pointer moves upwardly on the notched edge the spring 27 and the needle valve raised to increase the opening through the nipple 20 liquid 39. The" nipple 20 is tightly available for the passage of the liquid from the receptacle into the auxiliary nozzle member 8. If the pointer 30 is adjusted to occupy .a position about midway of the inclined edge 31 of the receptacle, a sort of spring pawl or'dog 32 is made to occupyacircumferential groove 33 intermediate two other grooves designated 34 and 35 respectively. The notched edge 31 of the receptacle and the circumferential grooves upon the body of the nozzle are so arranged that the 'operator may understand from the relative positions of the pointer 30 and the pawl 32, the relative proportions of the two liquids employed for spraying purposes. into the cavity in the boss 18, bemg slightly tapered to fit the upper part of the said cavity, the engaging parts being fashioned to form a ground joint. The connection between the threaded nipple 17 and the boss 18 while threaded, is nevertheless suiliciently loose to permit thereceptacle 22 under the influence of the weight 38,-to maintain at all times a' vertical position regardless of the angle which the nozzle 6 occupies with reference to the stem 37. In order to make this relatively loose joint liquid tight, we employ a gasket 40 interposed between the boss and the nozzle and surrounding the threaded nipple. 1

It will be understood that the cap 12 is so regulated as to allow water to escape through the opening 10 and around the-auxiliary nozzle 8, whilethe position of the needle valve must be such as to allow liquid to pass downwardly around the same and through the nipple 20 when our improved spraying device 1s in operation, assuming desired to mix the liquid in the receptacle 22 with ,the water from the hose 5. Having what we claim is;
1. In' combination, two nozzle members, arranged in suitable proximity, and having their discharge extremities arranged to produce an atomizing effect, a cap mounted upon one nozzle member for regulating said eflect, a main water supply conduit in communication with one nozzle member, a receptacle for poisonous liquid in communication with the other nozzle member, the said receptacle being mounted on the nozzle structure by a joint sufliciently looseto permit it to maintain an upright position above the nozzle members, regardless of the relative posit-ion of the nozzle. structure,and a counterbalance weight connected with the said receptacle and -ex'tendingbelow the omt.
