Be it known that l, JOHN Annan Possi- NEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Bragg, in the county of Mendocino and State of California, have invented new and useful improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification.

rlhe present invention relates to improvements in beds and mattress frames therefor,

the object of the invention being to provide a fcldable bedstead and collapsible mattress frame whereby the sides of the bedstead may be moved longitudinally to provide a full length bed when the sections of the bed are moved outwardly, and to occupy only a small space when the sides of the bed are folded together, the mattress frame for the bed comprising hinged sections which, when the bedstead is in its folded position may be swung to snugly engage therein and to accommodate the mattress which is supported upon the frame.

`With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the coi'istruction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following` specilication and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral l designates my improved bedstead in its entirety. The bedstead comprises a head 2 and a foot 3. Both the head member and foot member may be constructed of wood or metal, as desired, but in the showing of the drawings, the said Specilcation of Letters Patent.

The side rails, in the present instance, comprise a plurality of members each of an equal length, and arranged in pairs; that is, two of the side members of the sections of an equal size are disposed diametrically opposite each other throughout the length of the bedst-ead.

The pair of side rails connected with the corner posts of the head 2 are designated by the numerals 5. These members, as be`- fore stated, are angular, but both the vertical and horizontal portions of the said members have their edges flanged, as indicated by the numerals 6 and 7. The flange G is arranged upon the end of the horizontal member and depends a suitable distance therebelow, while the flange 7 of the vertical member is channeled longitudinally, as at S. rllhe ends of the side members 5 have secured thereon downwardly extending legs 9 which are disposed at a right angle to the said members 5 and which are reinforced through the medium of angular braces 10. The legs 9 equal in length the portion of the corner posts of the head le which project below the side rails of the bedstead, and the corner posts as well as the legs are preferably provided with the usual rollers ll. The second pair of side sections are designated by the numerals 12. rlhese members also comprise angle bars which are of a size sufhcient to be snugly received within the angle members 5, The members l2 have their vertical portions arranged within the channels S, and their horizontal portions are formed at their outer edges with longitudinally extending flanges 13, the said outer edge of the said horizontal portion contacting with the bead or flange 6 of each of the sections 5, and the bead or flange 13 projects a suitable distance below the said bead G of each of the members 5. The vertical members of the sections l2 have their inner faces formed with right angular extensions 14, the horizontal portions of which being disposed above the edge of the member received within the channel 8, and the said member 14: extending outwardly of the said members 5 sufficiently to receive the third sections of the side bars, which also comprise angle members and which are designated by the numerals 15. The right angular extensions 14 of the members 12 extend the entire longitudinal length of the said members and provide channels for the reception of the lower edges of the sections 15, while the upper member or top of each of the sections 15 abuts against the flange or bead 13 provided upon each of' the members 12. By such a construction, it will be noted that the head and foot of the bed are provided with adjustable or telescopic side rails, and so the foot and head of the bed may be moved away from each other to provide a bedstead of any desired length. However, the device is primarily intended for occupying only a small space when not in use, and is adapted to be slid or opened to form a full length bed. The sections comprising the side members are provided with co-acting stops which maybe integrally formed therewith or which may be connected thereto, as illustrated in the drawings. As shown in the drawings, the sections 15 have connected thereto stops 16, and the sections 12 may have their flanges 13 provided with downwardly extending lips 17 which are adapted to abut with the stops 16. 1n a like manner, the flanges 6 of the sections 5 are provided with similar stops 16 which coact with similar lips 17 provided upon the sections 12. The stop members 16 and 16 are preferably in the nature of removable blocks, the stop 16 being arranged upon the lower face of the horizontal portion of the sectionsv12 and extending beyond the outer edge of said section forms a support or rest for the flanges of the sections 12. The blocks 16 are provided upon the outer face of the flanges 13 of the sections 12 and form a rest for the lower edges of the flanges 6 of the sections 5.

With a bedstead, constructed as above described, it is, of course, essential that a mattress frame be provided which may be arranged upon the bedstead when the latter is either in its open or closed position, and such a frame is designated by the numeral 20. The frame comprises side members 21 having transverse connecting members 22, the latter members being disposed upon each of the horizontal flanges of the angle bars comprising the sides of' the bedstead, and of course, vary in thickness so that the side members 2O may be disposed in a horizontally straight position. The side members are further provided, at their ends, with spring receiving cleats or bars 23 which are arranged transversely of the said members, and which secure a woven wire spring 24e to the mattress frame. The side members may be provided with additional cross bars 25 which are adapted to not only sustain the cross bars in proper parallel relation but which also serve as supports for helical springs 26 which contact with the underface of the woven wire spring member 24 to add to the resiliency or flexibility of the same. The mattress frame is formed of three sections, two end sections A and an intermediate section B. The sections A-A. are substantially of an equal length, while the section B is comparatively small. The section B is hingedly connected with the sections A, as at 27 and 28. The side bars of the section B have connected thereto one of the transverse connecting members 22 which is arranged adjacent its hinge connection with the section A for the foot portion of the bedstead, and it will be noted by reference to Fig. -1 of the drawings that when the frame is swung upon its hinges 27 and 28, the section B will be disposed vertically and its side connecting member will contact with the foot member 3 of the bedstead, while the foot section A of the frame will overlie the head section of the said frame, the flexible body 24: permitting of such folding, and the space between the sections A of the frame is sufficient to accommodate the mattress 29 as well as the bed clothing if desired.

From the above description, taken in co-nnection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain without further detailed description.

Having thus described the invention, what 1 claim is 1. A bedstead having extensible side rails comprising slidable interlitting angle bars, the outer angle bars having flanged edges to provide seats for the inner angle bars, and stop members provided upon the sections for limiting the outward sliding movement of the sections, and the said stops adapted to serve as supports for the flanged edges of the horizontal portions of the angle bars.

A bedstead having a series orn interfitting slidable angle bars, the outer pair of bars having their ends flanged and the horizontal flange being channeled throughout, the second series of angle bars having their edges contacting with the fianged edges of the first mentioned series and vthe lower edges of the second series arranged within the channels of the first mentioned series, the second series having their edges formed with angular extensions to provide seats for the edges of the Hanges of the angle bars which comprise the third series of the Side rails? and stop members arranged upon each of the sections and adapted to (1o-:Let with the stops provided upon the angular sides Within which the same is received.
