Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. I7, 1914..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in I-Iat- Shapers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel construction of hat shaper, the object being to provide a device by means of which a hat can be quickly, easily and properly re-shaped without stretching or distorting the same at any point where re-shaping is not necessary.
Hat shapers in general use have consisted of two blocks operated by means of a turnbuckle. These devices however have simply stretched the hat longitudinally and in so doing have distorted the sides and consequently the ends have been shaped at the sacrifice of the side shape. I-Ieretofore in side shaping a separate stretcher has been necessary.
My invention aims to obviate these objections and provide in a single mechanism a device capable of perfectly shaping various sizes of hats and at all points, front, rear and sides.
YVith these various objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction and novelties of combination hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

specification: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, and, Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through one of the movable blocks.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a central casting A which is preferably in the form of a rectangular frame having a forwardly projecting internally threaded boss B and a rearwardly projecting internally threaded boss C, the inner end of a right and left hand screw D screws into this threaded boss B, the outer end screwing into the boss E of the forward shaping block F, a milled wheel G being integral with the right and left hand screw D and arranged at the juncture of the threads as most clearly shown and by means of which the threaded shaft can be quickly and easily manipulated for the purpose of moving the shaping block F in or out as desired. A similar shaft D works in the boss C and is provided with a similar milled wheel G but instead of the outer end engaging a shaping block itworks into a bifurcated yoke H, and by operating the milled wheel G the double screw is worked in or out and the yoke is moved forwardly or rearwardly as the case may be.
The forward ends of the yoke arms are bifurcated and pivotally connected to the yoke arms are the arms I, which at their outer ends are pivotally connected to the shaping blocks K and it is obvious that these shaping blocks can be shifted or adjusted to any desired point and then by turning the double screw the proper force can be applied thereto to produce the shaping action. These shaping blocks K can be swung around entirely to the rear so that they will occupy a position directly opposite the shaping block F or they can be adjusted to any intermediate position, one of these positions being shown in Fig. 1.
A right and left hand screw L passes transversely through the casting frame A and has a milled wheel M fixed thereon within the frame, the opposite ends of this right and left hand screw enter the internally threaded bosses N of the side blocks O and by turning the milled wheel at the center these side blocks are caused to move simultaneously in or out according to the direction of movement of the right and left hand screws.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is obvious that I am able to adjust the positions of the various shaping blocks so as to locate them at the various points where re-shaping is necessary.
Some heads are broader at the rear than at the front and to shape a hat to fit such a head the blocks K are adjusted to substantially the position shown in Fig. 1, whereas for a head which is narrow at the rear as well as at the front these blocks K would be adjusted toward each other and thereby relieve the pressure at the intermediate points. At the same time that the front and rear shaping blocks are being adjusted the side blocks can also be adjusted to ascertain the proper position or shape of the sides of the hat.
It will thus be seen that I provide an eX- ceedingly cheap, simple and efficient hat shaping device capable of carrying out all of the objects hereinbefore referred to.
What I claim is 1. A device of the kind described comprising front and side shaping blocks, together with radially adjustable rear blocks together with means for adjusting all of said blocks, as set forth.
2. A device of the kind described comprising front and side blocks radially swinging rear blocks, means for supporting and adjusting said rear blocks together with means for adjusting the front and side blocks as set forth.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a central casting, of front and rear screws adjustable with reference thereto, a front block carried upon the front screw, and a pair of swinging rear blocks carried by the rear screw as set forth.
4. Ina device of the kind described, the combination with a central casting, of front and rear screws adjustable with reference thereto, a front block arranged upon the front screw, a yoke adjustable upon the rear screw and rear blocks pivotally connected with said yoke, as set forth.
5. In a device of the kind described, the
