burners of that class of railroad hand lanterns in which the oil font is inserted into the body hoop from below.

The objects of this invention are to secure the burner to the font securely by simple and durable means, to produce a tight joint between the burner and font, and to render the construction of the burner simple, strong and capable of receiving wick tubes of various sizes or kinds.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the lower part of a lantern embodying these improvements. Fig. 2 is a detached plan view of the oil font and burner. represents the peripheral wall of the body of the oil font, 21 the top plate of the font, and 22 a perforated attaching collar which extends upwardly from the font and fits against the outer side of the body hoop and is secured to the latter by any suitable means. The upper edge of the peripheral wall 20 and the lower edge of the collar 22 are secured together preferably by a lock joint, with the marginal portion of the top plate 21 secured between these parts, as represented in Fig. 7. the oil font rises inwardly from this point and is connected to or formed in one piece with a burner socket 23 which extends to the bottom of the oil font and is provided near its lower end with openings 24 for the admission of the oil. The upper end of this socket is surrounded by an annular seat 2 11 upon which rests an annular washer 25 of fiber or other suitable material, the seat be ing depressed or having an outer shoulder 26, Fig. 6, by which the washer is held against lateral displacement. The washer is held on this seat by an annular holder 27 which is secured to the top plate 21 of the font and projects inwardly over the outer portion of the washer, leaving the inner portion of the washer exposed for the reception of the burner. The top plate of the font is preferably formed with an external upright shoulder 28 and the holder is of angle shape and secured with its depending outer portion to the outer side of this shoulder by solder or otherwise.

In assembling the parts the washer is placed upon its seat on the oil font and the holder is then placed upon the washer and permanently secured to the font, thereby securing the washer permanently to the font. The lap of the holder over the marginal portion of the washer is of such extent that the washer cannot escape from under the holder, neither can the washer be inserted underneath the holder after the latter has been secured to the font.

The holder is provided on diametrically opposite sides with holding lips 29 which are preferably formed in one piece with the holder by stamping and which are raised above the level of the holder and open at one end to receive attachingears 30 formed on the burner and adapted to be engaged underneath the lips by turning the burner in its socket.

The body of the burner is composed of an upper part 31 and a lower part 32 which are secured together by a hook joint or similar means- The upper part is provided at its lower edge with the attaching ears30 and between these ears with horizontal flanges 33, Fig. 10. The lower part is provided with a horizontal attaching flange 34:, Fig. 11, having an upstanding rim 35 which is The top plate 21 of provided with notches 36 to receive the ears of the upper part. The rim is bent around the horizontal flanges 33 of the upper part, Fig. 18, whereby the two parts of the burner are secured together.

By placing the burner in its socket, engaging its ears underneath the attaching lips of the font and giving the burner a partial turn, the burner is securely attached to the font and tightly seated upon the washer, whereby a tight connection of the burner with the font is produced.

37 represents the wick tube which is secured in the body of the burner in any suitable manner. This tube may be made of various sizes of different burners, all having bodies of the same size, so that a burner having a wick tube of any desired size may be secured to a given oil pot, as circumstances may require. The wick tubes in these different burners may also be constructed to burn different kinds of oils, for

instance, signal oil or kerosene.

38 represents the wick-raiser shaft which extends through a slot in the attaching collar and through a corresponding slot in the body hoop so that the button of the shaft is located outside the body hoop where it can be conveniently manipulated.

I claim as my invent-ion:

1. The combination with an oil font having a burner socket, of awasher arranged upon said font around said socket, and an annular holder which is separate from the font and permanently secured to said font outside of said washer and extends over the marginal portion of the washer and attaches the washer permanently to the font, leaving the inner portion of the washer exposed.

2. The combination with an oil font having a burner socket and a depressed annular seat around said socket, of a washer arranged in said seat around said socket, and an annular holder which is separate from the font and permanently secured to said font outside of said seat and extends over the marginal portion of the washer and attaches the washer permanently to the font, leaving the inner portion of the washer eX- posed, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination with an oil font having its top plate provided with a burner socket, of a washer arranged upon said font around said socket, and an annular angular holder for said washer extending with its horizontal portion over the outer portion of on said font around said socket, a holder for said washer extending over the outer portion thereof and provided with holding llps, and a burner seated in sa1d socket and provided with attaching ears adapted to be engaged underneath said lips, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination with an oil font hav ing its top plate provided with a burner socket and an annular seat surrounding said socket, of a washer arranged in said. seat,'

an annular holder for said washer provided with holding lips, and a burner seated in said socket and provided with attaching ears adapted to be engaged underneath said lips, substantially as set forth.

6. The combination with an oil font having a burner socket, of a washer arranged upon said font around said socket and an annular holder which is secured to said font outside of said washer and extends over the 1 thereby forming flanges of triple thickness on the body of the burner between said ears, substantially as set forth.
