Description

H. P. BALL.
PORTABLE LAMP FOR BURNING SOLID FUEL.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 11. I916. RENEWED APR-4,1917.
Patented May 22,1917.
STATES PATENT curios.
HENRY PRICE BALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, AS$IGNOR TO S. STERNAU &, CO., A OOPARTNERSHIP GOMPOSED OF SIGMUND STERNAU AND LIONEL STRASSBURGER,
OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PORTABLE LAMP FOR BURNING SOLID FUEL.
App1ication filed. January 11, 1916, Serial No. 71,404. Renewed April 4, 1917.
To all whom z'tmcy concern:
Bo it known that I, HENRY PRICE BALL, a citizen of the United States, resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Portable Lamp for Burning Solid Fuel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lamps for use with chafing dishes, cofiee machines and other purposes in which a portable lamp is employed.
The objects are:
First: To improve the means of attaChment of the cover.
Second: To improve the efi'ect of the lamp when in operation.
These and further objects will more fully appear from the following specification and accompanying drawings, considered together or separately.
In the drawings I Figure 1 is a plan view of a lamp embodying my invention, with the cover removed; and v T Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2, 2 of Fig. 1 with the cover in place.
In both views like parts are designated by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the lamp has a body 1. This body is preferably made of sheet metal stamped or otherwise formed to shape. It is adapted to contain a quantity of solid fuel and suitable fuel for this purpose is what is known as solid alcohol. This fuel is adapted to be transported in the body and when in use as a lamp the fuel is ignited, the flame passing out through the open top of the lamp. Around the upper edge of the lamp is a rim 2, preferably made of a separate piece of sheet metal suitably stamped or otherwise formed to shape. This rim is secured to the body in any suitable manner. Below the edge. of the rim is an annular recess 8. The inner wall a of time recess forms a cover seat.
: The cover 5-is preferably circular i'n'shape,
as shown, having avertical annular wall adapted to'engage with an annularwall 4. The engagement is close so that the cover is secured in place solely by friction. In
order to permitthe ready removal of the. cover it is provided w1th an annularflange- 6 located preferably at a distance from its Specification of Letters Patent.
wall 8. This is preferably made without perforations. Inside of this latter wall is a second perforated horizontal annular wall 9. These perforations may be smaller than the perforations appearing in the wall 7, but the operation is the same. Inside the annular wall is an annular lip 10 extending upward. This lip acts with a nozzle effect to direct'the flame upward. The rim 2 may beeasily made by a'stamping operation, the perforations being made at the same time. This is a very cheap device to manufacture. I prefer not to put the perforations in the vertical wall 8 for the reason that the perforations in such wall do not admit air so freely as perforations in the horizontal wall also for the reason that such construction is expensive to make, as the perforations cannot be made with a simple die, as the perforations in the walls 7 and 8 can be made.
The body 1 is shown with a plurality of grooves 11 extending from the bottom of the body to a point below the upper edge thereof. These grooves are shown as merging or tapering into the upper edge of the body. The body is also shown as provided with a circular recess 12. This may be omitted if desired as well as the grooves 11.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understoodthat the apparatus shown is merely illustrative and that the invention may be carried out in other ways.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A lamp for use with solid fuel com- Copies ofthis patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Oommislsionerof Patents, I
prising a body, a rim thereon with an annular recess lnside the edge of the body, a vertical wall lnslde the recess, there being a series of perforations inside the vertical wall, a'nda cover surrounding thewall and perforations and lying in the recess.
2. A lamp for use with solid fuel comprising a body, a rim thereon, there being an annular recess in the rim, there being a series of perforations in the rim, and a cover surrounding the perforations and lying ithin the recess.
a Alamp for use with solid fuel comprising a body, an annular recess in the rim lying within the body, there being a series of perforations in the rim, and a cover surrounding the perforations and lying within the recess.
4; Alanip for use with solid fuel comprising a body, an annular recess in the rim, there being a series of perforations in the rim, and a cover surrounding the perforations and engaginga wall of the recess.
"'51 A lamp for 'usewith'solid fuel comprising a'b o dy, arim thereon, there being a rim thereon, there being a rim thereon, there being an annular recess in the rim, lying within the body, there being a series of perforations in the rim, and a cover surrounding the perforations and engaging a wall of the recess.
6. A lamp for use with solid fuel, comprising a body with a rim thereon, an annular recess inside the edge of the body,
a vertical wall inside the recess, a plurality of perforated horizontal walls at different elevations, and a cover surrounding the vertical wall and engaging therewith.
7; A lamp for use with solidfuel, comprising a body with a rim thereon, an annular recess inside th-eedge of the body, a vertical wall inside the recess,a plurality of perforated horizontal Walls at different elevations, a centrally located annular lip, and a cover surrounding the vertical wall and engaging therewith.
