Bo it known that I, HENRY PRICE BALL, a citizen of the United States, resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Portable Lamp for Burning Solid Fuel, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in lamps for use with chafing dishes, cofiee machines and other purposes in which a portable lamp is employed.

The objects are:

First: To improve the means of attaChment of the cover.

Second: To improve the efi'ect of the lamp when in operation.

These and further objects will more fully appear from the following specification and accompanying drawings, considered together or separately.

In the drawings I Figure 1 is a plan view of a lamp embodying my invention, with the cover removed; and v T Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2, 2 of Fig. 1 with the cover in place.

In both views like parts are designated by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawings, the lamp has a body 1. This body is preferably made of sheet metal stamped or otherwise formed to shape. It is adapted to contain a quantity of solid fuel and suitable fuel for this purpose is what is known as solid alcohol. This fuel is adapted to be transported in the body and when in use as a lamp the fuel is ignited, the flame passing out through the open top of the lamp. Around the upper edge of the lamp is a rim 2, preferably made of a separate piece of sheet metal suitably stamped or otherwise formed to shape. This rim is secured to the body in any suitable manner. Below the edge. of the rim is an annular recess 8. The inner wall a of time recess forms a cover seat.

wall 8. This is preferably made without perforations. Inside of this latter wall is a second perforated horizontal annular wall 9. These perforations may be smaller than the perforations appearing in the wall 7, but the operation is the same. Inside the annular wall is an annular lip 10 extending upward. This lip acts with a nozzle effect to direct'the flame upward. The rim 2 may beeasily made by a'stamping operation, the perforations being made at the same time. This is a very cheap device to manufacture. I prefer not to put the perforations in the vertical wall 8 for the reason that the perforations in such wall do not admit air so freely as perforations in the horizontal wall also for the reason that such construction is expensive to make, as the perforations cannot be made with a simple die, as the perforations in the walls 7 and 8 can be made.

The body 1 is shown with a plurality of grooves 11 extending from the bottom of the body to a point below the upper edge thereof. These grooves are shown as merging or tapering into the upper edge of the body. The body is also shown as provided with a circular recess 12. This may be omitted if desired as well as the grooves 11.

In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understoodthat the apparatus shown is merely illustrative and that the invention may be carried out in other ways.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

a vertical wall inside the recess, a plurality of perforated horizontal walls at different elevations, and a cover surrounding the vertical wall and engaging therewith.
