bottom of the bowl of a tobacco pipe and disposed at a point immediately in advance of the smoke duct of the pipe so as to prevent the clogging of the latter by small particles of .tobacco, and further the construction of a uard wherein the central portion thereof wi l consist of relatively close'conVolutions which are located directly above the draft opening of the bore and designed to prevent the small articles-of tobacco from eing drawn into t e bore, and outer convolutions which are spaced relatively so as to permit of the required draft.

The device is constructed from a single length of wire which is bent to rovide an inner spiral or convolute horizo tally disposed portion "1 whose convolutions 2 are spaced relatively whereby said guard is rendered substantially foraminou's to permit of a perfect draft of the pipe. The outermost convolution 2 of the portion 1 is extended into a substantially annular sustaining'or supporting portion 3 having its free terminal bent upwardly to lie against the inner wall of the bowl of the pipe 4 herein shown and provided with a hook 5 which is adapted to embrace the upper edge of the bowl.

The portion 1 of the ard is disposed adjacent to the bottom 0 the bowl of the pipe and immediately in advance of the duct 6 in the stem 7, being designed to support the tobacco in such manner that it will be held against being drawn into the duct 6 when draft is applied to the stem, thereby preventing the choking of the duct as will be understood.

.T he device is such that the portion 1 may be slightly expanded if desired whereby it will readily accommodate itself to the inner diameter of the bowl. inner convolutions 2 of the portion 1 are disposed in closer relation than the outer con-- volutions whereby to give the article the maximum effectiveness immediately above the duct 6 and to prevent small particles of tobacco from escaping through the guard at the center thereof. It is also said that the device as illustrated herein will positively prevent the accumulation of tobacco in the extreme bottom of the bowl which lends admirably toward preventing the clogging of the smoke duct.
