%TATE@ PA GEORGE FISCHBUPP, OF CHICAGO, ELLEN 01S.
FOLDING BED.
Application filed December 13, 1909, Serial No. 532,791.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Gnonon FisoHRUPP, a citizen of the United States of America, and aresident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that type of f lding beds in which the bed forming sect'ons are connected together in a longitudinal manner and are adaptedto fold together into a box or housing to provide a seating fixture for day use. And the present improvement has for its object to provide a simple and eliicient construction and combination of the bed forming sections, which in an opening movement of the sections to provide a bed surface, the parts automatically rise and are shifted laterally into an elevated plane to the front of the supporting box or housing, to afiord an extended and roomy bed surface, and which in a closin movement of the sections to'provide a seating surface, the parts automatically descend and move back laterally into the supporting box or housing, all as will hereinafter more fullv appear.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a transverse sectional elevation, illustrating the present invention applied to a box couch bed, and with the parts in a closed condition. views showing the parts in a partly open and fully open condition, and graphically illustrating the movement of the parts and their coacting relation. Fig. 5, is a detail plan view of the parts in an open condition.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the box or housing to which the bed sections hereinafter described are attached, to be supported and housed thereby. In the construction shown in the drawings such housing is of the ordinary oblong box form known to the trade as the box couch bed; any other ordinary and suitable form' of housing may however be used, as the present improvement is capable of application to the sofa and like type of folding beds now in general use.
2 is a longitudinal rail provided at its respective ends with short upright members or links 3, and attached by means of pivot pins 4 passing through the lower parts of- Figs. 2, 3 and 4, are similar lateral arms 6 to the upper ends of the aforesaid upright members 3 of the rail 2 by suitable pivot bolts or rivets as shown.
7 and 8 are counterpart upper, and lower skeleton frame sections of the rectangular form shown, and which are pivotally con nected to the opposite ends of the aforesaid intermediate links 5 by hinge connections which permit of an independent quarter turn between the of folding and unfolding hereinafter described.
The intermediate links 5 and frame sections 7 and 8, above described, constitute a marginal supporting frame to which is attached the usual elastic wire webbing (not shown) usually employed in bed frame to support an ordinary mattress. Said marginal frame in its folded condition as shown in Fig. 1, forms a space for holding the mattress, etc., as usual in folding beds.
9 are lifting levers pivoted to the end bars of the lower frame section 8 aforesaid, with their lower ends having bearing upon bottom rails 1' of the housing 1, while their upper ends are pivotally connected to pull bars 10, now to be described.
10 are pull bars pivotally connected at one end to the lifting levers 9, above described, and at their opposite ends to the aforesaid intermediate links 5 at points adjacent to the points of pivotal attachment of the lower frame section 8 to said links 5.
11 are long radius links pivoted at one end to the end walls of the housing 1, and at the other end to the intermediate links 5, preferably at the same point of pivotal connection as the pull rod 10 to said intermediate links 5.
The operation of the parts is as follows: With the parts in the closed or seat condition illustrated in Fig' 1, the operator first tilts back the cover portion of the box or housing 1, after which an upward pull is made upon the free end of the upper frame section 7 to move the same into the upright position shown in Fig. 2; such movement taking place without any movement of the other parts of the bed frame. The operator exerts an outward and downward pull parts in their movements indicated in Fig. 4. During such operationv the intermediate links 5, through the instrumentality of the pull bars 10, levers 9 and bottom rails 1', raises the rear side of the lower frame section 8 to a plane level with that of the upper frame section 7 and intermediate links 5 aforesaid. Simultaneously with the above described rising movement of the lower frame section 8, the radius links 11, during the tilting movement of the intermediate links 5., acts to push the entire bed frame outward into a convenient position for use as a bed surface. Such outward movement is a pivotal one and takes place upon the pivot bolts 4 of the short upright members 3, before described. In a folding movement of the parts back to the original position shown in Fig. 1, the reverse of the movements above described takes place.
The different relative positions of the parts, are serially illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3. and 4, 1 of the drawings.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a folding bed, the combination of a main ,housing, pivot members attached to said housing, intermediate links pivotally connected to said pivot members, counterpart marginal frame members pivoted to the respective ends of said intermediate links, and means intermediate of said links and the housing for imparting an upward movement to the frame members and'intermediate links in an opening movement of the parts, the same comprising pull bars, levers and horizontal guiding means on the main housing, substantially as set forth.
2. In a folding bed, the combination of a main housing, pivot members attached to said housing, intermediate links formed with lateral arms for pivotal connection with said pivot members, counterpart marginal frame members pivoted to the respectiveends of said intermediate links, and means intermediate of said links and the housing for imparting an upward movement to the frame members and intermediate links in an opening movement of the parts, the same comprislng pull bars, levers and horizontal guiding means on the main housing, substantially as set forth.
3. In a folding bed, the combination of a main housing, a rail disposed longitudinally between the end walls of said housing and provided with upright end members, intermediate links formed with lateral arms for pivotal connection with said end members, counterpartmarginal frame members pivoted to the respective ends of said intermediate links, and means intermediate of said links and 'the housing for imparting an upward movement to the frame members and intermediate links in an opening movement of the parts, the same comprising pull bars, levers and horizontal guiding means onthe main housing, substantially as set forth.
4. In a folding bed, the combination of a main housing, short upright members ivoted at their lower ends to said housing, intermediate linkspivoted to said upright members, counterpart marginal frame members pivoted to the respective ends of said intermediate links, and means intermediate of said links and the housing for imparting an upward movement to the frame members and intermediate links in an opening movement of the parts, the same comprising pull bars, levers and horizontal guiding means on the main housing, substantially as set forth.
5. In a folding bed, the combination of a main housing, short upright members piw oted at their lower ends to said housing, in-
termediate links formed with lateral arms for pivotal connection with said upright members, counterpart marginal frame members pivoted to the respective ends of said intermediate links, and means intermediate of said links and the housing for imparting an upward movement to the frame members and intermediate links in an opening movement of the parts, the same comprising pull bars, levers and horizontal guiding means on the main housing, substantially as set forth. I
6. In a foldin bed, the combination of a main housing, s ort upright members pivoted at their lower ends to said housing, intermediate links pivoted to said upright members, counterpart marginal frame members pivoted to the respective ends of said intermediate links, radius links pivotally attached to the aforesaid intermediate links and to the housing, and means intermediate of said intermediate links and the housing for imparting an upward. movement to the frame members and intermediate links in an opening-movement of the parts, the same comprising pull bars, levers and horizontal guiding means on the main housing, substantially as set forth.
7. In a folding bed, the combination of a main housing, short upright members pivoted at their lower ends to said housing, intermediate links formed with lateral arms for pivotal connection with said upright members, counterpart marginal frame members pivoted to the respective ends of said intermediate links, radius links piyotally attached to the aforesaid intermediate links and to the housing, and means intermediate of said intermediate links and the housing for imparting an upward movement'to the frame members and intermediate in an opening movement of the parts, the same comprising pull bars, levers and horizontal guiding means on the main housing, substantially as set forth.
8. In a folding bed, the combination of a main housing, a rail disposed longitudinally between the end walls of said housing and provided with upright end members, mtermediate links formed with lateral arms for pivotal connection with said end members, counterpart marginal frame members piv-v oted to the respective ends of said intermediate links radius links ivotally attached to the intermediate and to the .parting an upward movement to the frame members and intermediate links in an opening movement of the parts, the same comprislng pull bars, levers and horizontal guiding means on the housing, substantially as set orth.
