SUFA OR DAVENPORT BED.
Specification of Letters I'atent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lrnown that l, Anonzo Gr. SHARP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sofaor Davenport Beds, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved construction of sofa or (lavenport bed in which the parts are of simple and economical construction and easy operation.
The invention is embodied in the construction and combination of parts set forth in the following description and pointed out in the appended claims.
Tn the accompanying drawing forming part hereof Figure 1 is a view of the bed in side elevation with parts in section showing the mechanism at one end of the bed, the latter being in open or extended position. Fig.2 is asimilar view with the bed folded or closed. Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing the bed and the frame in which it is directly mounted. Fig. 4 is a detail showing the drop leg for the outer bed section. Fig. 5 is a detail in side view of the rocking frame or standard. Fig. 6 is a detail illustrating the form of a slot in the outer section of the spring bed frame.
In the views 10 designates a rectangular box or frame that is bolted at 510 to usual ornamental end pieces 11; The forward part of this box constitutes the front rail of the structure or the base of the front rail. The character 12 designates the seat frame which is also of rectangular form andsuitably upholstered at one side. The seat frame 12 is hinged to the forward edge of the box 10 as indicated at 12 The spring bed frame is foldable and comprises an inncr section 13, an outer section 14 and a middle section 15 hinged to the sections 13 and 14. The spring bed frame is mounted or supported on the box frame 10, and on the under side of the seat frame 12, so that by manipulating the seat frame only the spring bed can be opened and closed, the bed being normally housed beneath the seat when closed. The mechanism for automatically effecting the opening and closing of the spring bed frame is the same at each end of the structure so that a description of one will suflice for both. Said mechanism as it appears at one end of the structure will now be described.
Connecting the inner bed section 13 with the box frame 10 is a long bar 16 and a short bar 17. These two bars are hinged together at 17 and to the bed section 13 and box 10 respectively. These bars 16 and 17 serve to support the said bed section at the proper level at the rear end when the bed is opened. Springs 18 connect the rear of the said bed section with the back or end connecting pieces of the structure and serve to hold the said bed section up 0d the floor when the bed is turned in or closed. These springs 18 are stretched when the bed is closed and because of this they also assist in raising the bed when it is opened.
Journaled in cars 19 and 19*, at each forward corner of the box frame 10 or on the front rail is a rocking frame or standard 20 that is hingedly connected at its upper end to the middle or connecting section 15 of the bed. This rocking standard 20 has rigidly secured to it an arm 21 and connect ing the arm 21 with the seat frame 12 is a link 22 hingcdly connected with the scat frame. The link 22 where it receives the pin 21 of the arm 21 is slotted as seen at 22*, and the front rail of the box frame is provided with a stop 19 near the ear 19 against which the standard 20 rests and is wholly supported when the bed is turned to open position best depicted in Fig. 1.
The end of the outer bed-frame section 14 is provided with a slot 23 that has in its upper wall (viewed when the section is open) a notch 23. Pivoted on said section to lie close to and parallel with said slot 23 is a catch 28 having a slot corresponding to the slot 23 except that it is enlarged at the inner portion, see Fig. 1, to form a shoulder 28. Uonnecting the said bed section and the scat frame is an arm 24 hinged on a pin at 2d to the seat frame and having a pin 2d? that extends through the aforesaid slot 23 as well as the slot of the catch 28. The arm 24 is provided with a short rigid arm 24% and connecting said arm 24" with the Patented 0ct.28,1913.
seat frame is a coiled spring 25 that tends when the bed is opened to hold the pin 24* up in the notch 23*, it being observed that in this position of the parts the spring 25 lies in a plane above that of the hinge pins 24*. Upon lifting the seat to close the bed the spring 25 assumes a position below the hinge pin 24: and the pin 24 is therefore drawn out of the notch 23 thus permitting the section 14 to fall onto theseat frame, but in the outward travel of the pin 24: in the slot 23 said pin 24 is caught by the shoulder 28 and the seat and section held fixed with reference to each other until the two are turned into the closed position of the bed. When the seat is lifted outward to open the bed the pin 24* is free to move in the slots of the dog and bed section beyond the shoulder 28 because the dog 28 is held downward by gravity so that the tWo slots are parallel to each other (see Fig. 2).
When the bed is opened the edge of the seat is supported by means of legs like that shown at 26. This leg is pivoted to a plate at 26 and is automatically operated by a link 27 that is hinged to the front bar of the bed section 14 and connected hingedly and eccentrically with the leg at 27. When the bed is opened the separation of the bed section 14 and the seat frame causes the leg 26 to assume an erect position, and conversely when the bed section 14 closes against the seat frame as before described the leg is thrown up alongside of said frame.
The operation is very simple. To open the bed the seat is taken at its free edge by the usual strap, as appears in Figs. 1 and 2, and turned out to the position indicated in Fig. 1. To close the bed the seat is turned inward from the position shown in Fig. 1 until it assumes the position shown in Fig. 2. In these manipulations the parts assume substantially the positions illustrated as the pened and closed positions respectively in Figs. 1 and 2. The rocking standards 20 permit the extension of the spring bed frame with great ease and permit of ample outward projection of the bed when opened. The room provided for the mattress and bed clothing between the bed frame sections is ample and such articles in reasonable bulk do not interfere with the operation of the mechanism. In this construction it will he observed that all the operating mechanism is mounted upon the box frame 10 and seat 12, hence the bed can be shipped unmounted and is easily assembled by the, retail dealer. \Nhen' so'mounted it makes a rigid structure. Of course, the back may be provided with a suitable top rail and with a suitable upholstered frame as well understood byv those skilled in the art.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In a sofa or davenport bed the combii nation with a stationary box frame and at seat frame hinged to the forward portion thereof, of a folding spring bed frame including a middle section, rocking standards journaled directly on the box frame and connected with said middle section, means to limit the outward movement of said-rocking standards and means connected with the seat for operating saidstandards when the seat frame is turned outward from closed position, substantially as described.
