To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, "WILLIAM H. Srnrrnnv son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Stovepipe-Joint; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the art of pipe joints, and particularly to a new and useful telescopically adjustable stove pipe joint, and one in which there exists simple, essential, novel and desirable features of construction, which features prevent the escape of smoke from the pipe, which is the pri mary object of this invention.
Another object of this improved stove pipe joint is to obviate the necessity of measuring and cutting sections, so as to fit between the stove and the smoke outlet of a wall. This object is accomplished by this improved telescopical slidable joint, which includes means to hold the sections of the stove pipe in adjusted positions.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure l is a view in elevation showing two sections of a stove pipe, broken away and connected together by the telescopical slidable joint. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the joint. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings l designates the upper section of the stove pipe, the upper extreme end of which is formed with crinips 2, adjoining which is a swaged bead 3. The crimps tend to hold the section in a smoke outlet of the wall of a room, while the bead prevents the crimped end of the section from extending too far into the outlet.
The section 4 of the stove pipe has its upper peripheral portion 5 turned outwardly and downwardly, thus forming a re silient flange 6. The lower end of the sec tion 1 extends telescopically down over the section 4, so that the flange 6 will yieldably engage the inner surface of the section 1. The two sections may be telescopically adjusted as desired. If the section 1 fits considerably over the section 4%, it is necessary to provide means to prevent a wabble of the two sections, so as to insure a solid and firm joint. To accomplish this end, a collar or band 7 is provided, the lower peripheral portion of which is turned inwardly and upwardly, to form a flange 8, which holds the lower end of the upper section 1 equally spaced apart from the circumference of the section 4. This band fits the lower end portion of the upper section 1, and is provided with ears 9, through which a bolt 10 penetrates, there being a nut 11 on the bolt, for drawing the band tight about the sections 1 and 4C. To further secure the band in place, a rivet ll secures the band and the lower portion of the section 1. By loosening the band the lower section a may be extended further into the section 1, or vice versa. By fitting the section 1 down over the section at, the smoke when passing through the sections will be prevented from escapin The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is A stove-pipe joint coi'nprising two pipe sections telescopically united, one end of the inner section being curved over constituting a flange directed downwardly and bearing resiliently in engagement with the inner circumference of the other pipe sec tion, and a band clamped about one end of the outer pipe section and having a portion curved upon itself forming a flange directed toward the first flange bearing resiliently against the outer cylindrical circumference of the inner pipe section, thus holding the two pipe sections in adjusted positions.
