To all who/m t may concern Be it known that l, Josnrn F. Pirro-R, a citizen of the Unit-ed States, residing at Eugene, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed-Spring Tight-ei'iers, of which the following is a specification.
rihis invention relates to bed spring tighteners, the object in view being to provide a simple and easily operated device which may be used for tightening a woven wire spring, after the same has become sagged, saving much valuable time and enabling the woven wire spring to be tightened uniformly throughout its entire width.
W ith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure l is a plan view of a bed spring tightener, embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section through the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating the first step in the operation of the tightener. Fig. -t is a similar view showing the second step. Fig, 5 is a similar view showing the third step. l? ig. 6 is a similar view showing the final step. Fig. is a similar View, showing the final condition of the spring, after it has been stretched and the tightener removed.
The tightener contemplated in this invention embodies a suitable number of lever arms l arranged in a common plane, and all attached to a common connecting bar or yoke 2. rlhe bar or yoke 2 is provided with a number of openings 3 extending therethrough and of a size adapted to tightly receive the lever arms l which may be permanently secured therein in any convenient manner, the arms l and the yoke 2 having a fixed relation to each other.
Each of the arms l is provided with a curved extremity Il; terminating in a hookshaped point 5, and being provided, adjacent to the point or extremity, with a notch 6 adapted to receive a fulcrum rod 7, which may consist of a piece of wire of heavy gage, approximately of the same length as the yoke 2, so that said fnlcrum rod may lie in the notches (l of all of the lever arms l. vided with a plurality of notches 9, the notches of the several. lever arms being arranged in alinement with each other, so that another rod 8, similar to the rod 7, may be inserted in said notches. it will thus be oloscrved that the lever arms as a whole are provided. with alining series of notches 9, `imdthat the rod 8 may be inserted in any one of'said series, the object being to locate the rod 8 at a greater or less distance from the rod 7 lying in the fulcrum notches (i, in accordance with the amount of slack to be taken up in the woven wire spring, or in other words, the amount of stretch to be imparted thereto in order to render the same tant. The operation of the tightener is illustrated in Figs. 3 to 6, inclusive.
Referring to F ig. 3, the initial step in the operation is to insert all of the lever arms l through the meshes of the fabric at a suitable distance from the end frame bar 10 of the stretcher, to which the woven wire spring is attached in the usual manner. rilhe arms l are inserted far enough through the meshes to enable the rod 8 to be placed in one series of notches 9 beneath the woven wire fabric, indicated at 1l. Aafter the rod 8 is placed in position, the yoke 2 is moved downwardly to the position illustrated in Fig. 4, thereby causing the hooked extremities of the lever arms to project up through the meshes of the fabric. The fulcrum rod 7 is then inserted in the notches 6 of the lever arms above the woven wire spring ll. rihe yoke 2 is then swung upwardly and over the fulcrum rod 7, carrying with it the rod 8, and this movement is continued until the rod S is moved to the position illustrated in lig. 5, where it rests upon the top of the frame bar l0, permitting fastening` staples l2 to be driven over the rod S and into the frame bar l0, the staples passing through the woven wire fabric, so as to hold the same securely to the bar l0. After the staples are driven into the frame or stretcher, the yoke 2 is lifted, as indicated in Fig. G, so as to free the bar 8 from the notches 9, after which the hooked eX- tremities of the lever arms may be disengaged from the rod 7 and the tightening device removed. ylhis may also be accomplished easily by withdrawing the rod 7 longitudinally out of engagement with the hooked extremities of the lever arms. rithe slack portion 13 of the woven wire fabric is then left free beneath the stretched portion of the fabric, where it will be out of the way. t.
It will be understood that a sufficient number of lever arms 1 is provided to engage the woven wire fabric throughout the entire width of the stretcher frame, said ,lever arms being comparatively thin, so that they may be readily inserted through the meshes of the fabric and being located approximately two inches apart, so. that when the stretching rod 8 is inserted in the notches 9 of the lever arms, a uniform pull and ten-l sion will be obtained on the fabric. rlhe yoke 2 is, of course, of sufhcient length to receive all of the lever arms 1, so that the entire set. of lever arms may be simultaneously and quickly operated. The rod 8 may either be left in the-bight or fold of the fabric and secured to the frame bar 10 of the stretcher by means of the staples 12, or if desired, said rod may be removed before the staples are driven all the way into the frame bar 10.
What is claimed is; Y
1. A bed spring tightener, comprising a series of lever arms'arranged in a common plane, and a yoke to which all of said lever arms are att-ached, said arms being provided with notches locatedrin alinement throughout the series, and adapted to receive a detachable rod.
2. A bed spring tightener, comprising a plane, and al yo-ke to which all of said leverr arms are attached, said arms being provided with alining notches in opposite faces thereofadapted'to receive a pair of rods.
