This invention relates to an improved .at- I tachment for beds, particularly the well i known metal bedsteads,'which serves as a backrest to support an invalid or other person in a reclining position.

The particular advantage of the device is thatyit is capable of supporting one or: more pillows or cushions inthe desired p0- sition adjacent the head of the bed, and also I that the device is adjustable with respect to the head in order to support the pillow. or pillows at the desired angle. f

' The improvements further consist in the means for securing the device detachably to the bed frame in the desired position, and; to the ineansfor holding and supporting the pillow or pillows, which last named means 1 is capable of adjustment to accommodate a; different number of pillows and pillows of different sizes. I To these ends, the invention consists of novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and, claimed. In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view 9f a bed equipped with one form of the improved attachment, thev positions of 'the pillows being indicated in dotted lines; Fig. 2'is a side elevation of the device removed trom the'bed, certain parts being omitted; Fig.3 is an enlarged detail section of' a portion of Fig. 2, showing how the pillow-holding loops are adjusted; and Fig. 4is a detail view of one of the corner portions of thepillow-supporting back piece or web. In the drawing, the device is shown as applied to one of the well known metal beds or cots, and it is particularly applicable to hospital beds, for supporting invalids or convalescents in .a reclining or sitting posture,.but it will be obvious that the device is capable of other applications.

The straps (Z3) are shown as integral with the fabric or material forming the back piece, but of course; this is not an-essential feature. The adjustment permitted by the buckles b of the straps (b), in connection with the series of holes pierced in the straps, will obviously permit the back piece to be used on beds of diflerent widths.

The back piece C shownin the drawing is intended to support at least three pillows, one above the other, so as to provide ave'ry Q efiicient back rest. The pillows are held against the back piece by means of loops 0, c" and 0 preferably consisting-of straps These loops are arranged in verticalseries at the side edges of the back piece. The lowermost loops ('0) are firmly attached at their lower ends to the back piece, as by the stitching 0 while their upper ends' are equipped with suitable fastening devices, such as hooks c by means of which in connection with cobperating fastening devices on the back piece, the loops may-be extended upward along the back piece to a greater or less extent in order to position pillows of different sizes. The fastening devices on the back piece or web are preferably const-ituted by eyelets 0 arranged in vertical series coiiperating with the respective books 0 The eyelets ,0 prefcrably extend practically throughout the height of the back piece at the side edges thereof, and the upper eyelets of the respec tive series cooperate with hooks 0'? at the upper ends of the loops 0, the lower ends of said last named loops being suitably atlowermost loops (0). Of course it will be obvious that the improved attachment can be applied to and re moved from a bed very quickly and readily, and that owing to its comparatively simple form it can be inexpensively and yet durably constructed,

Without limiting myself to the construction shown, I claim:

l. A back rest for beds comprising a flexi ble back piece, means for detachably securing one edge of said back rest to the head of the bed, means for detachably securing an opposite edge of the back piece to the side members of the bed, and pillow holding means applied to one face of the back piece, along each side edge thereof.

2. A back rest for bcds'comprising a flexi ble baclr piece or web, means for securing its upper and lower'edges to the head and side pieces-respectively of the bed, and a plurality of pillow holding loops applied to the back -piece-along each side edge, each of said loops being independently adjustable to accommodate it do pillows of diderent sizes.

, 3. A back rest for beds comprising a back pieceor web of flexible material, and a plu rality of connected loops formed by straps arranged along opposite side edges of the back piece, the upper loops overhanging those immediately beneath them.

4-. A back rest for beds comprising a back piece or web having fastening devices ar ranged along the side edges'thereofiand pi low holding loops arranged in parallel series along said side edges and having fastening devices to coiiperate with those of the back piece, to adjust the loops to pillows of different sites, the loops at each edge of the back piece being interconnected so that the.

upper loops overhang those immediately beneath them.

5. A back rest for beds comprising a web, means to attach it to the bed in an inclined position, and pillow holding straps each applied at one end to the upper surface of the web and having at their opposite ends hooks to coact with'series of eyelets in the web, whereby said straps may confine the end portions of diderently sized pillows.

6., A back rest for beds comprising a back piece, means for detachably securing one edge of said back piece to the head of the bed, means to detachably secure the opposite, lower edge of the back piece to the side pieces or members of the bed, in difierent adjustments along the latter, and pillow holding means carried by the back pieces,-

7., A back rest for beds comprising a flexible back piece, and pillow holding loops at the side edge portions thereof and detach able means for securely fastening said back rest adjacent each end to the bed frame.

8. A back rest for beds comprising a flexible back piece, and pillow holding loops at the side edge portions thereof, each of said loops being adjustable with respect to the back piece at at least one end of such loop.
