PAPER-ROLL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1913.
Application filed October 3, 1912. Serial No. 723,776.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SETH WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Castleton, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- Roll Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in paper roll holders for toilet and other purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having simple and eflioient means for performing the double function of locking the mandrel in operative position and as a brake for controlling the paying ofi of the paper from the roll.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for frictionally controlling the paper roll and which is readily adjustable to meet varying conditions.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and ar rangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a paper roll constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the latch member; Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of another form of the invention. Fig. 7 is a transverse section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, a base or wall plate 1 is shown provided with longitudinal slots as 2 for adjustably connecting the plate to a support by suitable fastening elements (not shown). A mandrel 3 extends at right angles from said plate 1 intermediately of the ends of said plate and is in the form of a metal tube which fits over a sleeve or collar 4 formed integral with the plate 1. Segmental slots 5 are formed in said plate adjacent the sleeve 1 and through which similarly shaped flanges 6 on the tube 3 extend and are upset to secure the tube rigidly to the plate. This tubular mandrel 3 has an aperture 7 near its free end for a purpose to be described and said mandrel is of a length substantially equal to the width of the paper roll which is to be mounted thereon such as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. A spring plate 8 is mounted within the tube 3 being secured at one end to the plate 1 in position to extend longitudinally of the tube substantially through the middle thereof. This plate 8 has an aperture 9 in its free end for engagement by a catch to be described. A removable end plate 10 is adapted to be detachably engaged with the free end of the mandrel 3 and has a chambered or socketed head 11 formed midway its ends and one end of said plate is preferably provided with an aperture 12 to receive one end of a rod 13 which is mounted at its other end in an aperture in the wall plate 1. (See- Fig. 2.) This rod 13 is designed as a guard to prevent waste by drawing off the paper longitudinally with the axis of the rolls. The end wall of the chamber or socket 14 of the head 11 has an angular opening 15 therein through which a spring pressed latch 16 is designed to pass. This latch 16 is shown in detail in Fig. 4 and is preferably constructed of sheet metal folded or bent longitudinally to form the side members 17 of the latch, said members being beveled at one end to facilitate the insertion of the latch in the opening 9 in the plate 8 forming a hook shaped catch. These side members 17 are also provided with registering recesses or notches 18 arranged adjacent the beveled end of the latch. A plate 19 extends transversely across the latch member at the rear end of the notches 18 and is preferably formed by cutting out the metal of one side to form one of the notches and bending the tongue so formed across the latch and providing said tongue with a screw threaded aperture 20 arranged in longitudinal alinement with the space formed between the side members of the latch for a purpose to be described. The plate 19 is longer than the space between the side plates 17 and projects at its free end beyond the opposite side plate to that from which it extends to form a stop for limiting the out ward movement of the latch in the aperture 15 in the socket 14. This latch member 16 is adjustably connected with a spring cap 21 by -means of a screw 22 which passes through a central aperture in said cap and between the rear ends of the sides 17 of the latch 16 into threaded engagement with the aperture in the plate 19. A coiled spring 23 fits snugly within said cap 21 and bears at its other end against the inner face of the end wall of the socket 1 1.
When the latch member 16 is connected with the cap 21 it forms a spring pressed push button which is mounted toslide in the socket 14 of the head 11 to adapt the latch to be projected suliiciently into the tubular mandrel 3 to engage the aperture 9 in the plate 8 and when so projected the tension of the spring 23 is exerted to hold said latch reliably in engagement with said plate whereby the removable end plate 10 of the holder is secured to the mandrel and disengagement thereof prevented until released by movement of the plate 8 which is accomplished by extending a tool or the operators finger through the opening 7 in the mandrel. It will thus be observed that when i a roll of paper is in position on the manbeing removed. By adjusting this screw 22 the tension of the spring 23 is varied and thus the frictional engagement of the plate 10 on the roll of paper is also varied, the spring serving to hold said plate 10 against the end of the roll which is mounted on the holder. When'the screw 22 is screwed in, the tension of the spring 23 is increased and the plate 10 binds more firmly against the paper roll and the outward turning'of said screw consequently reduces the tension of the spring and permits the plate 10 to more loosely engage the roll.
In the use of this device the end plate 10 having been removed. from the mandrel and rod 13 a paper roll is inserted on the mandrel with one end thereof in close contact with the plate 1. The plate 10- is then en gaged with the mandrel by inserting its head 11 within the mandrel and its apertured end is engaged with the rod 13 as shown clearly in Fig. 2. Before the plate 10 is so positioned, the rear end of the latch 16 is inserted through the opening 15 in thehead 11 and connected with the cap or push button 21 by the screw 22 and by pushing on the cap 21 the spring 23 therein is compressed and the free end of the latch member projected into the mandrel sufficiently to cause it to snap into engagement with the aperture 9 in the spring plate 8 and when the pressure on the cap is released the spring 23 forces said cap outward and reliably holds the catch in locked engagement with the plate 8 whereby the roll is locked on the holder and its removal prevented until all the paper has been unwound therefrom. After the paper has been unwound the latch 16 may be disengaged from the plate 8 by inserting the finger through the aperture 7 in-the mandrel and pressing said plate laterally thereby releasing it from the hook shaped end of said latch. When so released the spring will retract said latch and hold it out of engagement with the plate ready to be removed for the insertion of another paper roll when desired.
In the form shown in Figs. 6 to 8 the rod 13 is dispensed with and the plate 10 has its opposite ends bent inwardly at right angles to form guards for preventing waste. The head 11 of the plate 10 is provided on its periphery with a plurality of radially projecting studs 25 any desired number of which may be employed and which are adapted to engage notches 26 formed in the free end of the mandrel 3 and by means of which said plate 10 is reliably held against turning relative to the mandrel. Otherwise this holder is the same as the one above described and shown in Figs. 1 to'5.
I claim as my invention:
1. A paper roll holder comprising two separably connected members one of which has an arm fixed at one end thereto, a latch for detachably engaging said arm, a push button, a spring arranged between the latch and push button, and means for connecting said latch and push button and for adjusting the tension of the spring.
2. A paper roll holder comprising two separably connected members one of which has an arm fixed at one end thereto, said arm having an aperture in its free end, the other member being movable and having an aperture therein, a latch extending through said aperture and having means for engagement with the aperture in said arm, a push button on the outer face of said movable member, a spring between said button and latch, adjustable, means for connecting said button and latch, and means on said latch for limiting the outward movement of the latch.
