The present invention has reference generally to improvements in that class of inventions known as woodworking tools and more particularly relates to a tool handle.
It is the principal aim and object'of the present invention to provide improved wedge means cooperating with the socket in the body of the handle for removably holding the shank of a tool such as a file in a substantially rigid position with respect to the handle.
More particularly, the present invention contemplates the provision of improved resilient means for normally holding the wedge means within the socket.
As a further improvement, the invention contemplates the provision of a slidably mounted rod for carrying the wedge means and cooperating with the resilient means whereby when actuated the wedgemeans will be removed from the socket to consequently permit of the removal of the shank of the file to permit ,of the insertion of another file.
It is a more specific object of the present invention to so construct thebody of the handle that the various parts may be readily mounted therein. a
Among the other aimsand objects of the present invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efliciency high. 1 1
Other improvements and novel detail'sin the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention, should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a,
' convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construcshank 4E within the socket tion and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the principle of operation of the various parts.
The present invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention.

Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is provided a handle composed of tubular sections 1 and 2 the outer face of the section 1 being provided with a central and inwardly extending socket 3 for removably receiving the shank 4c of a tool such as a file 5. The socket has oneportion enlarged and positioned eccentrically of the central portion and provided with a slanting wall 6 for a purpose that will presently appear and likewise the inner end of the enlarged portion of the socket is provided with an opening 7. The opposite end of the section 1 is reduced and threaded as at S and closed by an end wall 9 which is provided incidentally with a small opening 10 in alinement with the opening 7. The other section 2 has the outer end closed as at 11 and provided with a small opening 12 in alinement with the openings 7 and 10 of a similar size. The opposite end of the section 2 is open and is interiorly threaded as at 13 for removable telescopic engagement with the reduced threaded extremity 8 of the section 1.
With a view toward providing the improved means for removably holding the 3 a rod 14 is slida bly mounted in the openings 7, 10 and 12 while a wedge 15 is formed on the outer end thereof. The wedge is removably arranged within the large portion of the socket while the outer slanting edge 17 cooperates with the slanting wall 6 in forcing the inner serrated edge 18 into removable engagement with the shank 4. This action of course is obtained upon sliding movement of the rod. The actuating head 19 is removably mounted upon the projecting end of the rod.
In order to normally hold the wedge 15 within the enlarged portion of the socket suitable resilient means are provided in the present instance consisting of a coil spring 20 one end of which is rigidly connected as at 21 to the rod within the section 2 preparatory to the application of the said section while the opposite end of the spring bears against the wall 9, the tension of the spring of course serving to maintain the wedge in position.
If desired a transversely extending fastening member 22 may be arranged through the adjacent ends of the sections to prevent accidental disengagement thereof. This fastening member of course would be necessary in the event that a screw driver or a like tool should be arranged in the handle.
In use, to release the file 5 from engagement with the socket the head 19. is pushed inwardly against the tension of the spring to consequently push the wedge out of the enlarged portion of the socket relieving the biting engagement between the wedge and the socket and the tool shank & permitting of the disengagement of the latter. Of course another tool shank may be inserted in the socket and upon release of the head 19 the coil spring 20 will act so as to slide the rod and consequently drawing the wedge into engagement with the tool shank.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, and it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus fully described this invention what is claimed and desired 5 to be secured by Letters-Patent, is:
' a socket adapted to receive a tool shank and having a portion of its wall tapered inwardly andhaving the opposite end reduced and threadedexteriorly, a rod slidably arranged through the socket and the inner end of the section, a wedge carried by the outer end of the rod for cooperating with the tapered portion of the Wall of the socket for retaining the tool shank, a spring disposed about the rod and connected thereto and bearing against the inner end of the main section, a secondary tubular section detachably fitted on the inner end of the main tubular section and through which the rod is slidable, and a handle removably mounted on the inner end of the rod for facilitating the operation of the rod. 7
2. A tool handle including a main tubular section having the outer portion formed with an inwardly extending socket adapted to receive a tool shank and having a portion of its wall tapered inwardly and further provided with a small aperture through the bottom of the socket, the inner end of the main section being reduced and threaded exteriorly and closed and also formed with a central aperture alining with the aperture in the socket, a rod slidably disposed through the apertures, a Wedge formed integral with the outer end of the rod for cooperating with the tapered wall of the socket and having the inner face serrated and designed to be frictionally engaged with the tool shank, a coiled spring disposed about the rod and having one end connected to the rod and the opposite end bearing against the closed and inner end of the main section, a secondary'tubular section having the inner end threaded interiorly in detachablelengagement with the reduced end of the main section and its outer closed end formed with a central aperture alining-with the other apertures and through which the rod is slidably disposed, and a head detachably fitted on the inner PIOJQClJlDg end of the rod for facilitating the forcing of the rod *against'the tension of the spring to consequently disengage the wedge from the socket for the release of the tool shank when desired.
