IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-SHADES.

The Schedule referred" to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same Be it known that I, ANDREW W. HAsKnnmof Boston, in the county of Suffolk and Commonwealth ofMassachusetts, have made an invention of certain newand usefulImproveinents, in Lamp-Shades; and i do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, due reference being. bad to a the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, andlin \vhich--- i Figure lis-a perspective representation of a cylindrical lamp shade containing rny invention; Figure 2 is aside elevation; and

Ashadeof thekirid is often applied to chimneys .yof diiferent heights, and it frequently occurs, also, that the chimney is uneven on top, or thatits body has an irregular. conformation and, therefore, in order that-the shade may be raised'or lowered to con form to the heightofthe chimney, so as to always occupy its properposition'with respect to the flame, and that itma-y. occupy a horizontal position whatever i may be the unevenness of the chimney-top, and also that it may be adjusted'so as to be kept away from the body of the chimney if the same be of an irregu- My'invention consists in the combination, withthe lamp-shade, of two or more hooks or. strips, adapted to catchorer the top of the chimney, each formed in sections united by a; sliding connectioinso that the length of the samewmayybevaried at pleasure, for the called, or others which require a chimney in part cytern, and which is cylindrical in cross-section.

but in lieu of attaching such shade to the chimney by several short feet or plates, projecting inward directly Q from the shade, or the metallic'el'asp encircling the top thereof, I attacinina suitable manner, according 1 to theobjects of my invention, two attenuated strips, cc, of sheet-metahlformed Iwith' a book, 0, at their upper-extremities, to jclasp or hook upon the upper edge of the chimney, and thus form suspensories wherebyathe shade, except at such points of suspension, may hang free from contact, directly or indirectly, with the-body of the chimney,and thus, as before premi'sed, protect the shade from injury resulting from direct radiation of heat,'through the agency of the more immediate contact of the short feet above mentioned, as now geuerallyiuuse. g

The above-described mode of suspending a'lamp shade from or about the chimney of a lamp maintains .such shade at an equable altitude with respect to the lamp-burner, thus obviating the great objection to shades now in use, which is seen in their liability to slip down upon the chimney, especially when the latter is of the form adopted in the sun, comet, and

weight of the shade, and maintain 'it securely in position about the chimney against accidentalmisplacement. l i

As beforeobserved, this mode of, producing the suspensory or suspenso'rie's of a circular lamp-shade permit of ready variation and adjustment of its altitude witlrrespect to the burner of a'lamp, to suit any and all circumstances.

' l he.employment of the two strips 0 c as suspensories of'a lamp-shade, adapt the latter with equal good effect to any form of chimney, whether cylindrical,

elliptical, or irregular in cross-section, and also enables such shade to assume a horizontal position (by the adjustable union of the plates 0 0) should any irregularities exist in the upper end of said chimney.

For the requirements of the quaker-burner, so

lindrieal and in part elliptical or flattened, my invention will be found to possess peculiar advantages.

Claim.

Whatl claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat- Y cut is- 'ine combination,-with the lamp-shade, of two or more supporting-hooks or strips adapted to catch over the top of the chimney, when each of said books or strips is made in sections united by a sliding connection, so that the length ot the same may be varied at pleasure, for the purposes herein-described.
