Description

S;G;POSTER if MODE 0F OPERATING SEWING AND OTHER MACHINES.
N0.105,932. Patented Aug. 2,1870.
UNIT D- STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
I S. CONANT FOSTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MODE 0F OPERATING SEWING AND OTHER MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 105,932, dated Adgnst 2, 1870.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, S. G. FOSTER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Operating Sewingand other Machinery, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the mode of operating sewing and other machines as a s'ubstitnte for the treadlemotion by which they. are' driven.
It consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts, by which the operator can. preserve an erect position and drive the machine by the action of the strong muscles of the back, legs, and thighs, instead of by the muscles of the feet alone, as in the treadlemotion.
The object of this invention is to render the working of such machinery less injurious to the health of the operator by obviating any tendeucy to diseases to :which persons, especially females, running such machines by treadles are more or less liable.
The accompanying drawing shows one of the side frames that support the table B and the operative mechanism beneath it. The-extension C of one frame forms a support for the seat ot' the operator, in connection with the leg M. The backD of the seat is pivoted at d, and is secured to the lever E beneath it. This lever is connected with the lever G, pivoted at g, by the bar 1*,pivoted at e and f, the latter end being made adjustable, so as to vary the throw of the lever G when required. The end of the lever G is connected with the crank a upon the end of the driving-shaft-that is held in the brackets H H by means of the link I, pivoted at'z'andj. The arrangementof these parts is such that as the back D of the seat is vibrated back and forth by the operator the required rotary motion will'be imparted tothe driving-shaft. The table B is pivoted to the side frames at b, and is provided with the necessarymeans to enable it to be ad justed-and held at any angle to suit the convenience of the operator, consisting of the slotted plate K and set-screw h.
, The foot-rest L, against which the feet of I scribed devices, an inclined adjustable tableto support and adjust the machine to theconvenience ot' the operator and admitof an erect position of the bod y,substantially as described and specified. J
3. In combination with the he rein-described devices, an adjustable 'foot' rest constructed and operating substantially as described and 4. The inclined adjustable table constructed and operating substantiallyin the manner described and specified.
S.'CONANT FOSTER.
