COMBINATION BRUSH AND COMB.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BARCLAY, Sn, a subject of the King of England, residing at Brixton Hill, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Brushes and Combs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in hair brushes and particularly to brushes of that character or type in which a comb is combined with the brush.
In articles of this character the comb is mounted in a pocket in the back of the brush in such manner that it can be projected through an opening in the edge of the back and held in a position where its teeth project beyond the brush back and when not in use can be positioned entirely within said pocket.
According to the present invention yielding means are provided for normally maintaining the comb entirely within the pocket in the back of the brush and connected with the comb are means for moving it outwardly to operative position and adapted to lock it in such adjusted position.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined brush and comb constructed in accordance wit-h the present invention, a portion of the back of the brush being removed and the comb being shown entirely within the pocket; Fig. 2 is a rear View of the article, showing the comb projected from the pocket or in position for use.
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that the back of the brush has formed therein a pocket A which opens through one edge of the back and in which is supported a comb B. The comb is connected with a rectangular shaped frame B that fits closely within the pocket, but is adapted to slide therein so that the teeth of the comb may be projected beyond the mouth of the pocket. The particular means shown for reciprocating the comb and its supporting frame co1nprise an arm O pivotally connected as at C with the frame and provided with a stud or finger piece C terminating in an enlarged head C The stem of the stud or finger piece'extends through a slot A formed in the outer plate E of the back of the brush and by means of said stud the frame can be adjusted to cause the comb to project beyond the edge of the brush as shown in Fig. 2. The pocket in the back of the brush may be formed in any suitable manner. As shown a portion of an intermediate plate or member E of the back is cut out to receive the frame B and comb, said parts being covered by the outer plate E which extends continuously over the body of the brush A and the handle A The manner of using and the advantages incident. to such a device as shown and de scribed will be readily understood and appreciated. It will be seen that the comb is never entirely withdrawn from the pocket. That is, a portion thereof is always within the pocket and this feature distinguishes the present invention from the somewhat in, the mouth of which is closed by theback of the comb.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a hair brush having a pocket formed in its back and opening through one edge thereof and having a slot formed in the outer wall of said pocket extending in a direction substantially perpendicular to the open side of said pocket and provided with an oifset portion at the end adjacent to the open side of said pocket, of a comb movable within the pocketto cause its teeth to project beyond the edge of the back of the brush or to lie entirely within the pocket,elastic means acting to maintain the comb entirely within the pocket, and an arm pivotally connected with the comb and provided with a stud that extends through said slot in the back of the brush and is adapted to enter the offset portion thereof when the comb is adjusted to project from the brush.

The combination with a hair brush having a pocket formed in its back and opening through one edge thereof and having a slot formed in the outer wall of said pocket extending in a direction substantially perpendicular to the open side of said pocket and provided with an ofiset portion at the end adjacent to the open side of said pocket, of a comb movable within the pocket to cause its teeth to project beyond the edge of the back of the brush or he entirely within the pocket, an arm pivotally connected with the comb and provided with a stud that extends through the slot in the back of the brush and is adapted to enter the 01?- set portion thereof when the comb is adjusted to project from the brush, and :1.
coiled spring having one end attached to said arm on the same side of the pivot thereof as the stud and its other end attached to the brush at a point displaced from the center line of said slot to the same side as that on which the off-set portion of the slot is formed, whereby said spring acts to hold the stud within the ofiset portion of the slot in the back of the brush.
