JOHN OTTO, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
RELEASIING-PENHOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14:, 1919.
Application filed December 26, 1916. Serial No. 138,936.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN OT'ro, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Releasing-Penholders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to releasing pen holders and the primary object of the device is to provide an improved clamping element for holding the pen point in the pen holder and adapted to be easily operated for either securing or releasing the pen so that the same may be easily removed without soiling the fingers of the person using the device.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a releasing pen holder of this character having means for securing the pen point so arranged whereby a portion of the securing means may be associated with the operating means disposed on the exteriorof the pen holder so that the pen point may drop out of the pen holder after the operating means have been actuated.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a releasing pen holder which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the pen holder showing the device in applied position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the operating mechanism in released position.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4c is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the invention, and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of another portion of the invention.
The handle 1 is provided with the usual metallic ferrule 2 of hollow cylindrical formation and having one end open for receiving the pen point 3. A fastening jaw 4: s pivotally mounted within the ferrule 2, this aw being a part of a locking member 5 formed of a single piece of material which includes a substantially circular port1on 6 having diametrically opposite trunnions 7 disposed within apertures formed in opposite sides of the ferrule. 4 projects forwardly from the upper edge of the central disk-like portion 6 while an operating arm 8 projects rearwardly from the lower edge of the said portion 6. The forwardly projecting jaw l is curved to conform to the curve of the inner wall of the ferrule 2 whereby the pen point 3 may be gripped between the wall of the ferrule and the gripping jaw 4.
11 opening in the form of a small slot 9 is formed in the ferrule 2 and the portion of the wall of the ferrule directly forward of the slot 9 is depressed to provide a recess 10 as clearly shown by Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. A locking latch-ll is constructed from a short strip of material bent at right angles to provide an operating finger 12 and a latch disk 13. The point at which the strip is bent to form the finger 12 and the disk 13 is arranged in the slot 9 and this point therefore, by virtue of its contact with the edge of the forward slot which is depressed, forms a pivot for the latch .so that the same may be operated for moving the operating arm 8 to the position shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing. The piece from which the latch 11 is formed includes a circular end portion which forms the latch disk 13 when the piece is bent. The diameter of this disk latch is slightly less than the interior diameter of the ferrule thereby eliminating the possibility of the latch being displaced from the slot 9. When in operative position the latch disk is disposed transversely in the ferrule as shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing and the latch finger 12 is received in the depression 10. The end of the latch finger is slightly bent upwardly to facilitate raising the latch when releasing the pen point.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable releasing pen holder has been provided. the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction The jaw may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
I claim: I
1. A. releasing pen holder comprising a handle, a ferrule attached to the handle and provided near its attached end with a transverse slot, the material adjacent the slot being pressed inwardly to form a depression, a locking latch including an operating finger projecting through the slot, the said operating finger being disposed at right angles with respect to the main portion of the latch, the right angularly bent portion being received in the said transverse slot and permitting swinging movement of the said latch, and pen point engaging means pivotally mounted near the opposite end of the said ferrule and adapted to be engaged by the said latch when the said finger is moved into the said depression for maintaining the latch in tight engagement with the said pen point engaging means.
2. A releasing pen holder comprising a handle, a cylindrical ferrule attached to the handle and provided with a transverse slot, a locking latch including a right angularly disposed operating finger projecting through the said slot, the right angularly bent portion of the latch being received in the said slot and forming a pivot for the said latch, pen point engaging means pivotally mounted within the said ferrule and en ageable by the said latch when the said finger is moved into engagement with the ferrule for maintainin the latch in tight engagement with the said means, the said ferrule having a recess terminating at the said slot, and a fastening jaw included in the said means and pivotally mounted within the ferrule, one end of the said fastening jaw being disposed in a position to be engaged by the said locking latch when the said finger is swung on its pivot to be received in the said recess.
3. A releasing pen holder comprising a handle, a cylindrical ferrule attached to the handle and provided with a transverse slot, a locking latch including a right angularly disposed operating finger projecting through the said slot, the right angularly bent portion of the latch being received in the said slot and forming a pivot for the said latch, pen point engaging means pivotally mounted within the said ferrule and engageable by the said latch when the said finger is moved into engagement with the ferrule for maintaining the latch in tight engagement with the said means, the said ferrule having a recess terminating at the said slot, and a fastening jaw included in the same means and pivotally mounted within the ferrule, one end of the said fastening jaw being disposed in a position to be engaged by the said looking latch when the said i nger is swung on its pivot to be received in the said recess, the said latch including a latch disk integrally formed with the said finger and disposed at right angles thereto and movable in the said ferrule for engagement with the said jaw.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
