LID-SUPPORTER FOR BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Mar. 25, 1913.
To all 'whom may concern.'
Be it known that we, Louis C. IsAAosoN and HENRY MORGAN, citizens of the United States, residino in city and county of Denver, Colorado, and Cripple Creek, Teller county, Colorado, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lid-Supporters for Boxes; and we do declare the following tov be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a pait of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in lid supporters for boxes, being more especially intended for supporting lids of cigar boxes in a suitably inclined position when the boxes are set in a show case.
IOur improved device also combines a price tag with a lid supporting arm, the said arm and tag being preferably formed of an integral piece of material, the material being preferably composed of relatively thin flexible metal adapted to bereadily bent; normally, the price tag and the lid-'supporting aiin lie in the same plane, whereby they may occupy a position parallel with, and close to one end of the cigar box, when the latter is closed. IVhen, however, the lid is raised and the arm is employed forI supporting it at a suitable inclination, the price tag is bent down against the inner surface of t-he open lid, whereby the price of the cigars contained in the box is readily observed by any one who glances at the box containing the cigars.
In our improved construction of cifrar lid` supporters, the paper lining. of the 0x is left partially loose at the end where the lid supporting the arm is connected, whereby, when the lid is in the closed position and the box is fullof cigars, the lid supporting device, as well as the price tag, may be separated from the cigars, beinglocated between `the loosened portion of the paper lining and the adjacent end of the box, thus making it practicable to lift the lid supporting devicev ipivotally connected with the end of the box when the lid is closed; while the other may be pivotally connected with both the box and the lid, so that the lid may be opened :and closed, while the lid supporting device is connected with both the box and lid. In this form of construction, the fastening device which connects the lid-supporting arm with the lid, passes through a slot formed in the said device of sulicientlength to permit the opening and closing of the lid without detaching the said device therefrom.
Having briefly outlined our improved construction, we will proceedv to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing: Figurel is a detail elevation of' one form of our improved device. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of la cigar box, showingthe device applied, the
lid being in the raised position. F ig. 3 is an end elevation of a box with the lid inthe same position as m Fig. 2, but with the price tag occupying a position in the same planeA with the lid-supporting arm. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section taken on the line 4 4,
Fig. 3. F ig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3,
but on a-smaller scale, illustrating a modified form of the lid supporting device. Fig.
`6 is a detail view of the form of the lidsupporting device shown in Fig. 5.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate one for-m of our improved lid supporting. device, the same consisting. of an a-rm member 6,.and a price tag member 4 formed integral therewith. The arm member 6 is provided at its opposite extremities with small perforations. 7 and 8, respectively. Vhile the device is in use a pivot pin 9, is passed through the perforation 8 in one end of the arm, thence into one end 10, of the cigar box. After this is done, the entire device is folded downwardly into a sort of pocket 12, formed between the end ofthe box and the paper lining 13, adjacent to said end, this lining being left loose to allow the device to be separated from the cigars 14, when the latter are packed in the box.
lVhen the device is in use, the lid of the box is raised to the desired inclination, after which a fastening pin 15, is placed through the perforation 7 into one end of the lid of the box, thus supporting the lid at the proper inclination. The price tag 4, is then bent into Contact with the front surface of the lid, thus exposing the price mark thereon to view in the cigar case. From this it will be understood that the device is formed of relatively thin sheet metal, whereby the price tag member may be readily bent out of the plane of the arm member 5, and into engagement with -the front surface of the lid of the box by forming the device of relatively tough material, the price tag may be bent several times vwit-hout separating it from the arm member.
In the form of construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the article which we will designate by the numeral 16 is of similar construct-ion to that shown in the other views, that is to say, it is composed of an arm member 17, and a price tag member 18,`formed integral therewith. One extremity of the arm member is pivoted, as shown at 19, to one end of the cigar box, while the opposite extremity is pivotally connected with the lid 20 of the box, while the latter is open, by passing a pin 21 through a slot 22, formed in the arm 17. This slot is of sufficient length to permit the lid to be closed, as indicated by dotted lines, in Fig. 5, without detaching the device from the lid. The e'xtremity of the slot 22 which is uppermost when the lid is raised, extends a short distance toward the price tag member, thus locking the lid against possible downward movement through accident. In order to unlock the arm and allow the lid to be closed, it is only necessary to push forwardly on the arm sufficiently to cause the pin 21 to move into the rear extremity of thepart 23 of the slot. Attention is called to the further fact, that the arm 14 is curved to facilitate the concealment of the device within the box when the lid is in the closed position. In this form of construction, the price tag is manipulated in the same way as in the other form of the device, that is to say, by bending it to occupy a position in contact with the front face of the lid, when the latter is raised, while when the lid is in the closed position, the price tag occupies the same plane as the arm 17, and occupies a position in a pocket 12, formed by loosening the paper lining 13, adjacent one end of the box.
From the foregoing description, the use and operation of our improved device will be readily understood, and need not be further described in detail.
Now having thus described our invention, what we claim is:
1. The combination with a box and a box lidof a lid supporter composed of a flat, relatively thin arm permanently pivoted at o'ne extremity inside the box end and having means at the other extremity for attachment to the box lid and a relatively wide port-ion near the last named extremity, normally in the same plane with the arm and attached to the latter by a narrow connection whereby it may be readily bent into a plane substantially at right angles to the arm. 4
2. The combination with a box and a box lid, of a lid supporter composed of an arm provided at its opposite ends with perforat-ions, fastening devices for connecting the said arm with the lid and the inner side of the end of the box, respectively, the lid extremity of the arm being equipped with an enlargement forming a price tag, normally lying in the same plane, but connected with the arm by a reduced portion to permit the price tag enlargement to be bent into engagement with the face of the lid, when the latter is raised, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a box and box lid, of a lid supporter composed of an arm provided at its opposite ends with perforations, fastening devices for connecting the said arm with the inner side of the end of the box and the lid, respectively, the lid extremity of the arm being equipped with an enlargement forming a price tag, normally lying in the saine plane, but connected with the arm by a reduced portion, the box being provided with a lining, and the latter being loosened at the end where the lid supporting arm is connected with the box, to allow the lid supporter tol occupy a position between the end of the box and the said lining when the box is closed, substantially Yas described.
4. In combination with a cigar box, a price tag having a comparatively long arm extending fro-m one side of the tag and arranged in the saine plane therewith, the free extremity of said arm being pivoted to the box end inside the box whereby said tag is adapted to be folded down to lie adjacent said box and on the inner side thereof.
5. In combination with a cigar box, a
price tag having a comparatively long arm In testimony whereof we afliX our Signaextending from one side of the tag and artures in presence of two witnesses. ranged in the same plane therewith, the free LOUIS C. ISAAOSON. extremity of said arm being pivoted to the HENRY MORGAN.
