COMB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 11, 1913.
Application filed December 27, 1909. Serial No. 535,046.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN E. Soo'rr, of San Francisco, California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, whereof the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combs especially of the class used for separating and adjusting the hair, and consists in combining therewith heating and drying devices.
I-Ieretofore women have had a great deal of trouble and time consumed to dry their hair after being washed, and for that purpose my invention is more particularly 1ntended, while combing the hair the drying operation is quickly effected; it may also be used for many other purposes unnecessary to mention.
The means employed to carry my invention into practice will be the best understood from the accompanying drawings following specification, and in which I have shown an embodiment of my invention in what I consider its best form, and have illustrated same in three figures, viz:
Figure 1, is a central longitudinal sect1on through my comb showing in elevat1on the teeth portion thereof; Fig. 2, 1s a cross-section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the large arrows; Fig. 3, is a cross-section on line 7 7 of Fig. 1 looking in a direction opposite that of the small arrows.
In the figures 1 represents an elongated body preferably elliptical shaped across its diameter and terminating in two fiat surfaces equal and parallel and provided with a chamber 2 therein, containing the heating and drying means which will be more fully described hereinafter; 3 the handle secured to one end of the body 1, and 4 the teeth portion of the comb secured also to the body.
Various means may be employed to heat the chamber 2, but I prefer hot water as shown at S, that being inexpensive, convenient and answers better my purpose.
I have shown in Fig. 1 a convenient means to fill the chamber 2 which consists of creating a suction therein by means of piston 17 placed in the chamber 2 and plunger 18 operating in the hollow projection 19 formed at one end of the body 1 and which constitutes the handle thereof. At the outer end of the plunger 18 I provide an outward projection 20 which serves to operate the same and on the projection 19 I cut a slot 21 in which the projection 20 of the plunger slides. At the opposite end of the body I form a nozzle 22 which is provided with cork 23 to close the aperture when the chamber is full. Thus constructed that part of my in vention acts in the same manner as an ordinary syringe and can be used as such for other purposes.
The body may be formed of various shapes across its diameter, but I prefer an elliptical shape as shown particularly in Fig. 3 and the teeth e'secured on one of the flattish sides, thereby obtaining a greater heating surface while combing the wet hair.
The operation of my device is as follows, viz :-The hot water or fluid is first inserted in the chamber 2 by the means above enumerated and thus warming the body 1 and likewise heating the teeth secured thereon, and while separating and adjusting the hair after being washed, the constant warm contact of the body 1 and the teeth 4 against the wet hair will naturally dry it and accomplish thereby the purpose of my invention.
It will be readily seen that the above described device can be changed or modified without however departing from the scope thereof, and believing I have produced novel and useful improvements in the art to which my'invention appertains, and having fully described the same, what I claim and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a comb, a hot Water chamber connected to said comb for heating the comb and means for filling said chamber, consisting of a piston mounted in said chamber and means for operating said piston.
2. In combination with a comb, a hot water chamber connected to said comb for heating the comb, a hollow handle connected to said chamber, a piston in said chamber for filling same and a plunger in said hollow handle for operating said piston.
3. In combination with a comb, a hot water chamber connected to said comb for heating the comb, an aperture in said chamber forming a combined inlet and outlet and a piston secured to said chamber for filling and discharging its contents through said combined inlet and outlet.
4. In a comb, a hot water chamber having teeth external thereto, a hollow handle integral with the chamber and having a slot I have hereto set my hand this 16th day of therein, a piston in the chamber, a plunger December, 1909, in the presence of two Wit- 10 on the piston, said plunger being movably nesses.
disposed in the handle, and a projection on T 5 the plunger extending through the slot and ALLEB SCOTT constituting means for manually operating Vitnesses: the plunger and piston. H. B. DENSON, In testimony that I claim the foregoing L. A. ALLYN.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressin g the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
