Be it known that I, SAM SoxoL, a citizen of Russia, residing at Dorchester, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bomb-Throwers, of which thefollowing is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in implements of warfare, and has as its special object the provision of means whereby explosive bombs or grenades may be man ually thrown at a very considerable distance with unusual accuracy.
A further object is to provide a manually operable device by which the bomb may be given a relative high original velocity and discharged at a desired instant, so as to be hurled or thrown in an easy and convenient manner.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing a bomb .thrower made in accordance with the invention.

The apparatus consists essentially in a cylinder 10, having a firmly secured transverse wall 11, adjacent to one end, the extending portion of the cylinder having perforations 12, in which are engaged the ends of flexible cords 14:, connected at their outer ends in a similar manner with projections 15, extending from a sleeve 16 joined with a handle 17, having a cross bar 18 adapted to be comfortably received within the hand of the operator.
Arranged internally of the cylinder 10, midway in its length, are looped clips 20 in which are slidably engaged a plurality of arms 21, the same being connected by cross bars 22, which are attached at their point of intersection to a rod 23, tlns rod being slidably engaged in a central opening made in the head plate 11, and is normally pressed outward through the action of a coiled compression spring 24 encircling the rodand abuttingagainst the cross arms 22 at one end and the partition plate. 11 at the other enc.

thearrangement being such that upon withdrawing. the knob 28, the crossbars and 3r1ns21 may beretracted within the cylin- The opposite ends of sthelsliding arms 21, are formed into forks 30 adapted to engage upon opposite sides of circular heads 31 formed with plungers 32 encircled by compression springs 33, by which-the heads are maintained normally outward, the inner ends of the plungers entering the bombs 35, preferably globular in their form and into which six or more phmgers may be in serted, it being understood that the distance from the extreme outer ends of the head 31, taken diametrally through the sphere, is slightly cylinder 10.
Fixedly engaged within the cylinder so as to protrude therewithin are four pins 36, adapted to retain the heads 31 in engagement within the cylinder, and secured between the forks 30 so as to retain the bomb within the cylinder until such time as the forks are withdrawn, whereupon the bomb, moving freely within the cylinder, may escape the pins 36 and thu pass outwardly.
In operation, the bomb having been placed within the outer end of the cylinder and passed substantially to its center, it is so turned that the heads 31 engaged upon the rear side of the extended pins 36, the forks 30 being withdrawn by retracting the cord 27 until the bomb has been properly placed, whereupon they are released so as to engage with the heads and hold the same against the sides of the pins.
The handle portion 18 is then grasped between the palm and fingers of the operator and the entire apparatus swinging about until a high velocity is attained, whereupon the other hand of the operator pulls the knob 28 retracting the spring 24: and withdrawing the forks from the heads 31 whereupon the bomb, turning slightly within the less than the inner diameter of the 7 cylinder, becomes free of the projecting pins 36 and passes outwardly from the open end of the cylinder in whatever direction the cylinder may be at that moment.
From the foregoing it will be seen that an effective device for manually throwing bombs has been disclosed, comprising few and simple parts not readily liable to disarrangement and which materially augment the throwing power of the operator.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A bomb thrower comprising a hollow cylindrical tube, means for manually whirling said tube, a plurality of internally proj ecting pins in said tube, bombs having extending heads adapted to engage with said pins, forks engageable with said heads 5: whereby they are held in position against said pins, means for holding said forks in engagement with said heads, and means for retracting said forks whereby said heads Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the may be freed and the bomb permitted to pass outwardly from said tube.
2. A bomb thrower comprising a cylindrical tube, a wall set therein adjacent to one end, a plurality of flexible elements engaged with said tube beyond said wall,a handle at the opposite end of said flexible elements, whereby said tube may be swung in a circle, a plurality of internally projecting pins set in the wall of said tube, spherical bombs having extending propections adapted to engage with said pins, a plurality of sliding arms having forks at their ends, said forks being engageable with the heads of said projections, means for normally holding said forks in engagement with the said heads, and means for retracting said forks whereby said bomb may be moved within said cylinder and be discharged therefrom.
