APPLICATION FILED'MAILSO, 1912.

'GQLVIBINED @llfilEi-BRUSH AND I-IQLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM P. Waters, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tooth- Brushes and Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful. improvements in toilet articles and more particularly to that type of toilet articles wherein a tooth-brush is combined with a holder or holding-case to provide a combination de vice for holding, carrying, and housing a tooth-brush.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical combined tooth-brush and holder having means for folding the brush proper into a small compass and thoroughly housing the same when not in use,
so that it may be readily carried in the pocket or otherwise, while at the same time being efi'ectually protected from dust or contamination by other foreign substances.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will possess advantages in points of eficiency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construe tion and operation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described pointed outin the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which? I Figure l is a perspective view showing the brush in its open position; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder, the brush being inclosed' therein; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the holder, the brush being inclosed therein.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates the brush proper, which may be of any approved or conventional type of toothbrush, the same essentially consisting of the brush head 2 and the carrying shank 3, which latter is ordinarily of sufficient length to constitute the handle of the brush. The present invention contemplates shorten ing the carrying-shank. 3 and combining therewith the holder 4, which not only constitutes the main handle or grip of the brush,

but also acts as a protective housing therefor when not in use.
The holder a is of a suiiicient size to acand adapted to inclose the entire brush.-
Each of the sections is provided with an imperforated bottom 7 and a surrounding flange-wall 8, providing a holder, when the open sides of the section are brought together, of suflicient size for the brush proper.
Each of the sect-ions 5 and 6 is provided with a. reduced extension 9 formed-on one end and arranged at one side thereof which is cut away at the bottom as shown at 10 and the side walls pivotally secured to the end of the shank 3 by means of the pin 11. The sections 5 and 6 are preferably made of celluloid, aluminum 'or other suitable mate-.
posite directions away from the brush and the bottoms 7 brought squarely together to form a handle. The sections when in an open position being held against movement by having the rib 12,.f0r-med on one of the sections, arranged in the transverse groove I3 formed in the other section.
When the sections are folded they are swung away from each other, toward the brush, over which they close, the extension edges 14: overlapping to hold the sections in a closed position.
From the above it will be readily seen that I have provided a simpleand practical combined tooth-brush and holder having means for folding the brush proper into a smell compass and thoroughly housing the same when not in use, so that it may be readily carried in the pocket or otherwise, while at the same time being. efi'ectually protected from dust or contamination by other foreign substances.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it will be obvious that various changes in thedetails of construction and in the proportions may be resorted tofor successfully carryin my ice invent-ion into practice without sacri cing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is':
1. In a device of the character described, the comiiiination of a brush, having a trunsated shank, a holder comprising two box sections having one end pivotally secured to the end of the shank and adapted to close over the brush, extension edges formed on said sections and adapted to overlap to retain the sections in a closed position, said sections forming a handle when swung-laterally in opposite directions to an open position, and means for preventing longitudinal i movement oithe sections when in an open position.
2. In. a device of the character described, the combination of a brush having 'a truncated shank, a holder comprising two box sections-having one end pivotally secured to emmas the end of the shank and adapted to close over the brush, extension edges formed on said sections and adapted to overlap to retain the sections in a closed position, said sections being swung laterally in opposite directions to an open position, and oppositely disposed when m an open position to form a handle, one of said sections having a transverse groove formed in the outer face thereof, a rib formed on the outer face of the other section and disposed in said groove when the sections are open to prevent longitudinal movement thereof.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
