CRANE-HOOK-LOCKING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of South Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crane-Hook-Locking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in crane-hooks and more particularly to a look ing device therefor whereby objects suspended from said hook will be prevented from accidental disengagement therefrom.
A further object of my invention is to provide a locking device for a crane-hook which when in locking position will reinforce and strengthen the hook.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
IVith these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangements of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cranehook embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the crane-hook showing a portion of the locking device in top plan view.
The preferred form of construction of my invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises an ordinary cranehook 1 suspended by the usual cable 2.
The locking device which is designed to retain anything suspended on the hook 1 comprises a reduced medial portion 3 formed on the hook 1 on which is rotatably mounted a locking arm 4, said medial portion being cylindrical in form. The locking arm 4 comprises two circular arms 5 terminating in adjacent ends 6 which are secured together by means of a rivet 7 said arms 5 embracing the medial, portion 3 as Specification of Letters Patent.

clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. From this construction it is apparent that the locking arm 4 may swing around the body of the hook l to any position desired by the operator. When in the locking position as shown in the figures of the drawing, a hook 8 provided at the free extremity of the arm 4 embraces the point 9 of the crane-hook and efiectually reinforces the same, thus rendering the lifting of large and heavy objects safe.
In order to hold the locking arm 4 in the position shown in Fig. 2 a reciprocatory spring-pressed pin 10 is mounted therein for engagement with a transverse aperture 11 provided in the point 9 of the hook 1.
As shown in Fig. Qthe spring-pressed pin 10 extends nearly onehalf through the aperture 11, this being suflicient to retain the hook 8 in engagement with the hook point 9. In order to release the engagement of the spring-pressed pin 10 with the aperture 11, a small handle 12 is pressed toward the body of the book 1, this action compressing the helical spring 13 since said handle projects radially from said spring-pressed pin as shown in Fig. 1. One end of the helical spring 13 abuts one end of the springpressed pin 10 and the other end thereof abuts a semi-circular band 14 which is held in position by the rivet 7 and inserted between one of the arms 5 and the exterior surface of the medial portion 3. The object of the band 14 is to prevent friction between an end of the helical spring 13 and the medial portion 3, it being readily seen that no friction occurs between said spring and band since the latter rotates with the arm 4.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into elfect, this is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of my invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the pre cise details of construction as set forth, but
