. J. B. MUSE FASTENING DEVICE Filed March 15. 1923 Q5 13 L 1 b I V 2 :A TTORNEYS.
Patented Nov. 11, 1924.
JOHN BIRCH MUSE, OF CAMERON, NORTH CAROLINA.
FASTENING DEVICE.
Application filed March 15, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. Moss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Game ron, in the county of Moore and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful liii'iprovements in Fastening De vices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac con'ipanying drawings.
This invention relates to a fastening device, and the object of the invention is the construction of a simple and eflicient device whereby a chain or the like can be quickly engaged with the device or released from it.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a fastening device which is susceptible of being used to connect two parts together, such as a hoisting chain to some part of a lift or dredge or excavating machine.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a clevice constructed in accordance with the present invention, while Figure 2 is a vertical, central, longitudinally sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional view, taken on line 3--3, Fig. 2, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4- is a perspective view of the catch device.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the latch evice.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 comprises a casing which is adapted to be placed over one end of a wooden singletree 2. The casing 1 is provided with a pair of ears or extensions 3 through which extends rivet 4 (Fig. 1) for fastening the device to a carrier.
The casing 1 is provided with a slot 5 in one side portion, which slot opens into a compartment 6. A latch device 7 is pivotally mounted at 8 in slot 5 and compartment 6.
The latch device 7 comprises a body 9 which provided with an outwardly extending grip portion 10 that projects beyond;-
Serial No. 625,406.
the oute-r face of the casing. The body 9 is provided with a recess 11 formed in its outer edge into which recess the inner, curved end 12 of the catch device 13 is adapted to ride, when the catch device is in an unlocked position (Fig. 2). The body 9 is provided with a curved, shouldered, lower end 14 that is adapted to normally rest against the curved end 15 of the upwardly extending lug 16 formed at the inner end of the catch device 13. Depending from the lower end of body 9 is a stop lug 17 which normally bears against the rear end of lug 16, Fig. 2, for limiting the pivotal movement in one direction of the latch device 7.
An eyebolt 18 is screwed into the outer end of the grip portion 10 of the latch device and another eyebolt 19 is screwed into the casing and these eyebolts 18 and 19 are connected by a coil spring 20 so that the latch device is normally held in a locking engagement with the catch device (Fig. 2). The catch device 13 comprises a body 21 that has, at its inner end, the lug 16, as well as the curved portion 12, and formed in its upper edge, contiguous to the article engaging hook portion 21 is a link-receiving notch 22 which registers with recess 23 of casing 1 (Figs. 1 and 2) this recess 23 is formed in said casing contiguous to the article engaging hook portion 21 The catch device is pivotally mounted on rivet 24L (Fig. 1), which rivet extends through an aperture 25 of body 21.
While I have described the preferred em" bodiments of my invention, and have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates, during the ex tensive manufacture of the same and I, therefore, reserve the right to make such alterations or changes as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
In a device of the character described, a casing having a longitudinally-extending chamber formed therein and at one end having an article engaging hook portion extending transversely of the casing, a catch pivotally connected with the casing and extending longitudinally thereof and positioned partially in the chamber an having one end portion partially externally thereof, the outer end portionof said eaten terminating in a hook portion extending transversely thereof for engaging and cooperating with the hook portion of the casing in holding an article, the inner end portion of said catch being provided with a side extension having a concaved end face, a latch pivotally mountT ed in the chamber and positioned transversely therein and having an outwardly extending handle forming end portion and an inwardly extending end portion having a convex edge face for engaging the convex In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature.
