To all wiwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB F. D 0mm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Heating and Distributing Materials, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to machines for heating and distributing materials, and it has for its object to provide such a machine which may be used to heat crude oils, asphalt, etc and to distribute them on roads. The machine .is provided with a water boiler anda tank for the material, which are heated, steam from the boiler being supplied in jets to the nozzles which distribute the material on the road.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, inlwhich the/preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawing similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal, sectional elevation of my invention; Fig. 2 is-a rear end view on an enlarged scale of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front end view on an enlarged scale of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view, showing the drum, the steam pipe and the nozzles for feeding the material and the steam; and Fig. 5 is a transverse, sectional view of Fig. 4.
By referring to the drawings it will be' seen that a casing 5 is provided at the front of which there is formed a furnace 6, a boiler 7, having vertical tubes 8, and a flue 9, this flue 9 communicating with a flue 10, running longitudinally of the casing 5. The furnace 6 is adapted to communicate directly with the flue 10, through the passage 11,
- but, when desired, the damper 12 may be closed so that the furnace 6 may then communicate with the flue 10, only through the vertical boiler tubes 8, and the flue 9. There is a damper 13 in this flue 9, which may be closed when desired. Above the front 14 of the casing 5, and secured thereto, there is a water tank 15, this water tank 15 being provided to supply the boiler 7 by means of the injector 16. In the casing 5 there is disposed a receptacle 17, which contains the material which is to be distributed on the road. The bottom of the receptacle 17 forms opening 19 there is a conduit 20, the conduit 20 having branches 21 which communicate with the interior of the drum 22. There are valves 23 in these branches 21. There is a steam pipe 24, which leads from the boiler 7 through the flue 9, and the flue 10, this steam pipe 24 being disposed back and forth through the flue 10, so that the steam in the said steam pipe will be superheated. The terminal of the steam pipe 24 communicates with the steam pipes 25, in which there are valves 26. These pipes 25 communicate with the pipe 27, which is disposed in the drum 22, and which extends through the openings 28 in the heads 29 of the said drum 22. There are openings 30 in the bottom of the drum 22, nozzles 31 being secured to the drum 22, and communicating with the said openings 30, these nozzles 31 each having one side 32, which is pivoted to the body of the nozzle, so that it may be moved relatively to the opposite side 33 of the nozzle 31,'to open or close the outlet 34 of the nozzle, as may desired. The side 33 of the nozzle has a threaded opening 35, in which the screw member 36 meshes, this screw member 36 being disposed through an orifice 37 in the side 32, and being operated by a hand wheel 38. There are openings 39 in the steam pipe 27, the nozzles 40 communicating with the said openings 39, and being secured to the steampipe 27. These nozzles are disposed downward, and in the nozzles 31, there being considerable space between the outside of the nozzles 40 and the inside of the nozzles 31.
As will be seen by referring to Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, the sides of the nozzles 31 diverge transversely of the machine, so that the material flowing from the nozzles will be distributed across the road on which the machine travels. Brackets 41 are secured to the casing 5, and depend therefrom,
It will be understood that When the material in the receptacle 7 is being melted, and
is not being distributed on the road, the
damper 12 is opened, and the damper 13 is closed, so that the gases will flow through to heat the receptacle 17 and without passing through the boiler 7. When the material in the receptacle 17 has been melted, and is suiticiently heated, the damper 13 is opened and the damper 12 is closed; This directs the heat through the boiler tubes 8, before going under the receptacle l7, and thereby increases the steam pressure in the boiler. When the material in the receptacle 17 has not only been melted, and sufiiciently heated, but there is a sufficient pressure of steam in the boiler 7, the machine may be operated by'opening the valves 23 to permit the material from the receptacle to flow into the drum 22, and out of the nozzles 31, and the valves 26 may be opened to permit the superheated steam to flow from the steam pipe 27 and from thence to the nozzles 40. As the material flows through the nozzles 31 it is kept at a proper temperature, so that thereis no danger of the nozzles becoming clogged. In fact, the steam pipe 27 serves to increase the temperature of the material in the drum 22 at the last moment, so that it will be deposited on the road at a proper temperature.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a machine for heating and distributing material, a casing, a receptacle in the casing and spaced from a wall thereof to form a flue, a boiler, a furnace for heating. the boiler, and communicating with the flue, a. steam pipe leading from the boiler and disposed in the flue, a nozzle, a coridiiit connecting the interior of the receptacle with the nozzle, a second nozzle for directing steam to heat the material flowing through the first-mentioned nozzle, and a conduit for connecting the steam pipe with the second nozzle.
2. In a machine for heating and distributing material, a casing, a receptacle in the casing and spaced from a Wall thereof to form a flue, a boiler, a furnace for heating the boiler, and communicating with the hue, a steam pipe leading from the boiler and disposed in the flue, a nozzle, a conduit connecting the interior of the receptacle with themozzle, a second nozzle disposed in the first-mentioned nozzle for directing steam to heatthe material flowing through the first-mentioned nozzle, and a conduit connecting the steam pipe with the second nozzle. 3. In a machine for heating and distributing material, a casing, a receptacle in the casing and spaced from a Wall thereof to ,form a flue, a tubular boiler the tubes of which at one set of ends communicate With the flue, a furnace communicating with the tubes at the other set of ends, and open directly'with the flue, a damper for cutting .oft' direct communication between the tubes at the first set of ends with the flue, a damper for cutting ofl direct communication between the furnace and the flue, a nozzle, a conduit connecting the interior of the receptacle with the nozzle, a second nozzle for directing steam to heat the material flowing through the first-mentioned nozzle, and a conduit for connecting the steam pipe with the second nozzle.
