UNITED STATES JAY s. rosxy, or SANDUSKY, onro.
FEED-WATER. HEATER.
Application filed March 20, 1922. Serial No. 545,145.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AY S.'FOSKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feedater Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to feedzwater heaters for steam boilers, and more particularly for locomotive boilers.
An object of the present invention is the provision of a feed water heater capable of use on locomotive boilers, wherein the waste gases of combustion maybe employed for preheating the water on its passage to the boiler.
Where a boiler is not provided with a feed water heater, the water is delivered to the boiler cold and it is then necessary to raise it to boiling temperature in the boiler. Various types of feed water heaters have heretofore been employed in connection with steam boilers, and such feed water heaters are generally a separate and independent apparatus and are incapable of use on locomotive boilers due to lack of space.
In the present invention, I arrange a plurality of tubes beneath the boiler and connect these tubes to the source of supply. Suitable means are provided for passing the products of combustion from the boiler around these tubes to preheat the feed water.
By means of the construction provided, the feed water of a boiler is preheated from a source of heat that is usually wasted.
In the specific form of the invention disclosed, the heating tubes of the feed water heater are arranged in loops and a baffle plate is extended between the loops to force the gas from the fire box to travel over each section of tubes on each side of the bafiie plate.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:
Figure l is a central vertical sectional view of a locomotive boiler showing the invention applied, V
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view on line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 8 is a similar view on line 33 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view on line 4-4 of Figure 3, and,
'Figure 5 is a detail vertical sectional view on line 55 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1, designates the water compartment of'a locomotive boiler provided with suitable fire tubes 2. The products of combustion from a fire box (not shown) pass over an arch or bridge 8, through the fire box to a smoke compartment 4, atthe for ward end of the locomotive. Heretofore it has been customary to permit direct passage of the products of combustion through the smoke compartment to a stack 5. In the present invention, I provide a vertical baffie plate 6, arranged in the smoke compartment and connected to a horizontal baffle plate 7, extending substantially the entire length of the boiler and spaced from the bottom. The feed water heater consists of a plurality of pipes 8, extending from the smoke box to a point adjacent the other end of the boiler and then looped as at 9. As-
shown, one section of each of the pipes 8 is arranged below the horizontal bafile plate 7, and is connected to a similar section above the baffle plate 7 by loop 9. An intake, header 10 is arranged forwardly of the baffie plate 6, and is connected to a suitable" source of supply by means of a pipe 11. The lower sections of the pipes 8 are extended upwardly at their forward ends, as at 12, and communicate with this header (see Figures 4 and A similar outlet header 13 is arranged on the opposite side of the baffle plate and is connected to the boiler by a pipe 1 1. The upper sections of pipes 8 are connected to this header by vertical portions 15, extending through openings in the bottom of the header.
In operation, theproducts of combustion- While the invention is'illustrated incon-v same, andthat various changesin the-shape,
size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit" of the invention or the scope; oi the s u bjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: 7 v
1, In; a; steam-boiler, a substantiallyvertical bafiie plate; arranged: in. the smoke box, 1
an intake header and an outlet; header ar ranged. on opposite sides of-said bafiie plate,- a series of pipes connected" to each 0t said headers. and extending beneaththe; Water compartment of the: boiler, and a substanr tially horizontal baffle plate extending from; the lower endirofsaid vertical baffleplate:
and arranged adjacent, said? pipes whereby,
the products of combustion are forced to flow under said horizontal baflle plate and around-said pipes.
2.. In a steam boiler, a substantially vertical bafiier plate arranged in the smoke box, an intake header arranged on one side of said baffle plate remote from the Water compartment-of the boiler, said header being connected to a source of supply, an outlet head er arranged, on the opposite side of said battle plate adjacent the Water compartment of the boiler and communicating thereWith',=- a series of pipes having: their opposite ends connected tosaid headers, said pipes being extended beneath the Water, compartment of the boiler and provided with loops adjacent the remote end of the water compartment,
