Be it known that I, ROBERT CARON, a citizen of the United States, res dlng 1n the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gloves, of which the following is a specification.

. My invention relates to improvements in gloves.

It is especially designed to reinforce gloves, such as are used for handling hot metal or wire ropes, and for, other uses where there is great strain and wear upon the glove which would soon destroy. the ordinary glove.

My invention consists in .a reinforcement of the palm and thumb piece, with a slit out between the palm and thumb piece so as to leave the flexible inner portion free from the stiffening of the palm piece.

It also comprises a similar construction of the finger protective fronts where the ends are contiguous to the edge of the palm reinforcement, and in the use of a skirting piece stitched to the palm extending around the fingers and thumb; the upper edge of this skirting portion-being unstitched and free, but covering the joint or separation between the finger and palm protective strips.

The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the glove with the skirting strip turned back to show the junction of the palm and finger protectors. Fig. 2 is a front view showing the thumb turned in. Fig. 3 is a section on line XX Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on line VV Fig. 1.

In the construction. of gloves for heavy work it is customary to reinforce the'fronts of the fingers and the palm and front with supplemental coverings of leather. When these coverings are applied in the usual manner they make a very stiff and cumbersome glove. It is the object of my present invention to so construct these reinforcing strips that they will amply protect the parts required, but will leave a sufficient flexibility for easy handling.

As shown in the drawings, A is the body of the glove. 2 is a palm piece which may be cut integral with the thumb protecting front 3 so that the palm extending over behind the glove will also extend across the angle of the thumb; and thence the thumb portion 3 will extend up to the .end of the thumb, being carried over or partially around the thumb and stitched behind the thumb, as shown.

That portion of the palm piece which extends below the bottom of the thumb piece is separated therefrom by cutting the leather with a notch, as shown n.4, and this lower portion of the palm is carried around and stitched either with the seam of the glove which extends up from the wrist, or behind the same, if preferred, and it leaves a space, as at 4, between the bottom of the thumb reinforce and the edge of the notch between it and the palm piece so that when the thumb is moved the two parts may approach and separate from each other. This allows the thumb to be bent freely, as the only thickness of leather to be affected will be the notch 4 between the thumb and the palm piece. It will be seen that the thick reinforce leather of these two parts may approach and recede from each other as the thumb is bent and the flexibility of the thumb will not be'impaired.

6, 7 8 and 9 are the finger reinforce strips which are stitched upon the glove at a suflicient distance behind-the front or wearing portion to prevent the seams from being exposed to rough usage. The lower ends of these finger guards terminate a suflicient distance above the stitching of the palm portion to allow a space between them, and this space is the thickness of the main portion of the glove, thus allowing this portion to bend freely; the finger port-ions moving with relation to the palm portion as previously described for the thumb joint. In this way a very considerable additional thickness of leather may be applied to the wearing portions of the glove without materially lessening the flexibility.

In order to protect the stitching, at the lower edge of the fingers and at the upper edge of the palm is shown a skirting piece 8 which has the lower edge stitched across the upper edge of the palm, and it may then be turned upward so that its free edge extends across the base of the fingers, but is not stitched thereto. This covers the meeting ends of the fingers and the palm'portion and protects them altogether from wear while not interfering with the flexibilit This skirting strip may be carried sufli- Y ciently around to the rear of the fingers and either stitched separately or with the stitchin'g of the glove itself so that no wear will come upon the stitched portion.

The object in leaving the upper edge of the skirting portion 8 free is, as previously stated, to leave the utmost possible flexibility to the joint between the fingers and the palm reinforce, andat the same time as all movements where friction occurs are in the direction from the palm ,tOWard the finger ends, as in grasping and lifting material, it will be seen that this free edge will be al- .Ways carried and maintained over the lines of stitching which it protects. The channel or notch at the base of the thumb is similarly protected by a skirting piece 8.
