NICHOLAS F. ALSTON, OF INEZ, NORTH CAROLINA.
WHIP-RACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 23, 1911.
Patented Dec. 17, 1912.
Serial No. 662,029.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS F. ALs'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Inez, in the county of Warren and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip-Racks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to whip racks and has for its object, to provide a rack forholding a number of whips, and wherein the whips may be locked without interfering with the exhibition thereof. In accomplishing this object I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of a whip rack constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is a cross section of the upper portion of the rack, on the line IIII, Fig. I, showing the slidable locking board with its apertures in registration with those of the top. Fig. III is a cross section on the same line, showing the sliding board in looking position.
Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates a stand comprising a top 2 and supporting legs 8, the top 2 being provided with apertures 1 which are preferably arranged in rows throughout its length. On the legs 3 and spaced downwardly from the top 2 are rails 5, and supported on said rails is a locking board 6 which is adapted for limited sliding movement on the rails, preferably immediately beneath the-top 2. The board 6 is provided with apertures 7, which are adapted to register with the apertures 41 in the top 2, but which, when the slide is moved to locking position, only partially registers therewith, so that the body of the board limits the area of the opening through the top apertures. Fixed to the legs 3 and spaced downwardly below the locking board is a guide board 8, having apertures 9 which register with the apertures 4: in the top. Fixed to the legs 3, near the bottom, is a support board 10, which is without apertures and is adapted for supporting the butts of the whips. I prefer to provide the top 2 and locking board 6 with brackets 11, through which the hasp 12 of a padlock 13 may be projected to lock the sliding member to the top 2 when the former is in locking position, so that the whips cannot be removed from the rack.
In using the rack, the slide board 6 is moved to one limit of its travel, in which position the apertures 4 and 7 register. The whips are then passed through the apertures 1 and 7 and through the apertures 9 in the guide board, so that their butt ends may rest on the board 10. The sliding board is then moved laterally to limit the area of the openings in the top and sliding board, so that the butt ends of the whips cannot be drawn therethrough. The sliding board is then looked to the top by means of the padlock 13. The whips may then be left in exposed position, as it is impossible for a whip to be removed from the rack.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is A whip rack comprisinga stand, apertured members fixed on the stand, an apertured member adapted for limited sliding travel on the stand therebetween, the apertures in the sliding member being adapted for registration with those in the fixed members when at one limit of its sliding movement and for only partial registration therewith when at the opposite limit of said move ment, and brackets on said top and sliding board adapted to receive a lock for securing said sliding member in the last named position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NICHOLAS F. ALSTON.
