To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, WiLLIAM H. Gone, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sharon Hill, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show- Cases, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to show cases, and it has particular relation to a show case of a sectional character, which may be easily set up and taken down, and which may be stored or shipped from place to place in compact form.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive form of show case or guard for store counters or tables and which is particularly adaptable for use in 5cand 10 stores and in department stores, being so designed as to be easily set up and taken down by persons of ordinary intelligence, so as to respond to the requirements of mercantile establishments of the above mentioned character in its adaptability for shifting from one counter to another as occasion requires in the marketing of different classes of goods.

My invention also contemplates a construction in which obstructions to the free use of the counter surface are reduced to a minimum and in which access to all parts of the counter on the part of the attendant can be had with a minimum of inconvenience.

My invention further contemplates a construction which may be readily adjusted to various inclinations of the top surface of the counter, it being understood that the counters of stores of the character mentioned are usually inclined on their top surfaces for the more advantageous display of the small wares which are handled by such stores.

My invention finds a useful application in connection with candy counters, affording a large degree of protection from dust and from pilfering by customers, yet not interfcring with the free access of the attendant- V to all parts of the counter, and not subtracting from the complete use of the counter top.

The nature and characteristic features of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of a portion of a show case or counter guard cmbodying the main features of my present invention, the same being shown in place on a counter of a type which is commonly used in 5 and 10 stores and in department stores; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the structure shown in F .ig. l, the view being taken approximately on the line of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation thereof; Figs. 4 and 5 are vertical sections, taken approximately on the line g g of Fig. 2 showing the construction respectively of the end and intermediate supports or frames; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view, certain parts being broken away, illustrating the construction at the intermediate supports or frames; Fig. 7 is a sectional detail view of the upper inner corner of one of the intermediate supports or frames and the associated parts; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a preferred form of partition, and the parts for mounting the same on the counter in connection with the show case and Fig. 9 is a horizontal section showing in detail the manner of securing one of the supporting members for the partition to the front rail or ledge of the counter.

Referring to the drawings, in the particular embodiment of my invention therein shown, 10 is a store counter of any preferred construction, to the edges of the top board 11 of which are secured the rails 12 and 13 forming ledges for the retention of the articles placed upon the counter.

14: is the end support or frame and 15 is one of the intermediate supports or frames, each of which supports or frames consists of a horizontal top portion 16, an inclined front leg 17, and an inclined rear leg 18 to which is adjustably secured a foot bar 19 having a horizontal lug portion 20 for securing the member 19 to the rear portion of the counter. lhe lower or extreme end of the inclined front leg 17 of each of the frames 14 and 15 is provided with a similar vertical lug portion 21 for securing said leg to the frontrail 13 of the counter. The foot member 19, as before stated, is adjustably secured to the inclined rear leg 18, the adjustment, as shown, being accomplished by means of a slot 22 in the foot member vided a series of tie-rods 36 which have 19, through which slot clamping screws or bolts 23 pass and which are in threaded engagement with the inclined leg 18, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.

The horizontal portion 16 and the front inclined leg 17 serve respectively for the support of horizontal panels 24, and inclined panels 25, of glass, which effectively guard and protect the articles which are placed upon the top surface of the counter. A number of screws 26 are threaded into the top portion 16 and the inclined front legs 17 of the intermediate frames 15 and these screws 26 serve as an abutment for the end edges of the panels which rest upon said frames. The screws 26 also serve to secure a covering strip 28 which covers the adjoining ends of the glass panels and makes a more presentable appearance for the structure, as well as serving to retain the glass in place without danger of fracture. The inner end of the covering strip 28 which is used in conjunction with each of the intermediate frames extends backwardly as shown in Fig. 7 and laps over the rear edge as at 29 of the horizontal panel 24, extending a sli ht distance as at 30 on the underside thereof forming a hook which prevents the horizontal panel from sliding backwardly over the supporting frame. The end frames 14: are also provided with a series of screws 27 which pass through apertures 31 in the glass panels (see Fig. 4) and also serve to confine a. covering strip 32 similar to the intermediate cover strip 28, but also having a perpendicular extension 33 which covers the ends of the horizontal and inclined panels 24L and 25 and provides a ledge for the retention of a vertical end panel 34 of glass which guards the counter against access from the end thereof. This end panel 34 rests at its lower edge on a strip 35 which may be made of wood and nailed to the inner side of the end rail 12 of the counter which enables the end panel 34 to be made parallel notwithstanding any inclination of the top surface of the counter. To preventlongitudinal separation of the panels from the intermediate frames and to stiffen the structure generally, there is proslott-ed ends 37 which are engaged by screws 38 mounted in the supporting frames, the slots being provided for the purpose of any minor adjustment which may be necessary due to inaccuracies in the cutting of the glass panels. These tie-rods 36 are secured to the rear inclined legs 18 of the frames near the top thereof where the same are joined to the horizontal portion 16 as clearlv shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 7 of the drawings. v

As before indicated, the structure herein described is particularly adaptable for use where the articles are placed directly upon the counter top and in order to provide subdivisions of the counter space there may be provided partitions 39, preferably made of glass and having U shaped clips 40 at the rear end which are provided with angle brackets ll having apertures 42 for securing the clip 40 to the counter top by means of screws or the like and thus locating the rear end of the partition. The front end of the partition is likewise provided with a U shaped clip 43 which is apertured as at 44 for the purpose of being secured to the front rail 13 of th counter by means of screws 45 as clearly shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings.

It will be seen that there is thus provided a simple and inexpensive form of show case or counter guard which may be readily set up and taken down by persons of ordinary attainments, and the frames of which may be nested together for storage or shipment in compact form, and also in which variations in the inclinations of counter tops may be readily compensated for, in which free access can be had from the rear of the counter, and in which there is no material obstruct-ion to the free use of the counter space.

Having thus described the nature and characteristic features of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A show case adapted to be mounted on a count-er top comprising glass panels and frames upon which said panels are supported, said frames each consisting of a horizontal top portion and two diverging leg portions, and strips secured to said frames for covering the ends of the panels, a vertical panel supported by the end frame, and the covering strip secured to said end frame being bent over along its length to form aledge for the retention of said vertical panel.

A show case adapted to be mounted on a counter top comprising a series of frames each consisting of a horizontal top portion and two diverging leg portions having means at their free ends for fastening to the counter top, and glass panels supported on the horizontal portion and one of the leg portions of each of said frames, the leg portions of said frames having no connection at the free ends thereof other than the counter top.

3. A show case adapted to be mounted on a counter top comprising a series of frames each consisting of a horizontal top portion and two oiverging leg portions having means at their free ends for fastening to the counter top, and glass panels supported on the horizontal portion and one of the leg portions of each of said frames, the leg por tions of said frames having no connection at the free ends thereof other than the counter top, and one of said leg portions of each frame being adjustable in length.

4. A show case adapted to be mounted on a counter top comprising a series of frames each consisting of a horizontal top portion and two diverging leg portions having means at their free ends for fastening to the counter top, and glass panels supported on the horizontal portion and one of the leg portions of each of said frames, the leg portions of said frames having no connection at the free ends thereof other than the counter top, the supporting frames having means forming abntinents for the end edges of the glass panels, and tie-rods extending between the frames at the top of the strneture.
