Be it known that I, HENRY THORNE, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at. hflelbourne, in the State of Victoria and Commonwealth of Australia, have invented an Improved Resilient Top Piece for lthe lileels of Boots and Shoes, ot' which the following is a specification.

, This invention relates to an improved resilient top piece for the heels of boots and shoes, which has been devised to take the place of the ordinary rubber top piece which is secured to the top litt of the heel proper.`

'.lhe object oi the invention is to provide a top piece which when secured to the top litt ot' the heel proper will make the heel as resilient as a heel fitted with the ordinary rubber top piece7 and at the same time resist wear for a much longer period.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring now to the annexed sheet of drawings in which the saine reference numerals indicate the same parts Wherever they occur :`-`Fignre l is a plan of a top piece for the heels of boots and shoes constructed according to my invention. Figs. 5 and 6 show in. plan and side elevation a modified form of wearing strip.

5 are tangs which project one from each end of said wearing strip l, and are 'like the latter embedded 1n the resilientI material as shown in Figs. l, 3,' and 4. These tangs prevent any Apossibility of the said Wearing strip getting outv of position. v

6' are holes in the Wearing strip 1 and tangs 5 to receive nails or screws for securing the top piece to the heel proper.

As shown in Fig. 6 the Wearing strip l may have its under side 3 inclined instead of rabbeted as shown in Fig. 2. i In order to manufacture my said top piece the Wearing strip l is first placed with its rabbeted side upward in arnold of a predetermined size and the`desired quant-ity of india rubber, pulp leather, or composite material in a plastic condition is supplied to said mold. Pressure is then lapplied With the result that the Whole is solidified the wearing strip being embedded in the resilient material l'lush with the outside surface thereof.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A topor tread piece for the heels' of boots and shoes, composed of resilient material,

combined with a narrow aro-shaped metal wearing strip having its under side rabbeted and its inner edge regularly corrugated, the

wearing strip having securing tangs projeeting from the opposite ends thereof and eX- tending forwardly within and inclosed by the body ot' the top or tread piece, openings being formed in the top or tread piece for vreceiving fastening devices therefor.
