WAGON-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 24, 1911.
Patented Nov. 12, 1912.
Serial No. 635,119.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LINCH B. GRIFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of WVilson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in wagon beds of the type that are provided with extension sides hinged to swing outwardly from a vertical to an inclined position, and has for its primary object simple and efficient means for holding said sides in adjusted relation to each other.
With this and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is an end view of a wagon bed embodying the improvements of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof, and, Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the means for holding the hinged sides of the wagon bed in different adjusted positions.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the main sides of my improved wagon bed, and 2 the ends thereof. Tie bolts 4': and 5 are secured to the sides just beyond or outside of the plane of the ends 2 so as to assist in maintaining the structure rigid.
6 designates extension sides which are socured by hinges 7 to the upper edges of the main sides 1, whereby the extension sides may assume different angular positions relative to the main sides as well as be supported in a vertical position, the extension sides 6 being provided with cleats 8 for extension end boards 9. To increase the capacity of the wagon bed, as required, I may provide additional extension sides 10 which are likewise provided with cleats 8 for end extension boards 9, the said extension boards 10 having secured to their outer sides, vertically disposed cleats 11 which are designed to be slipped downwardly into metallic straps 12 secured to the outer faces of the sides 6. In order to secure these parts tight together in vertical position, I provide tie bolts 13 and chains 16, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The main sides 1 are provided with socket members 14: for detachable standards 15, as best illustrated in- Fig. 2,
In order to assist in holding the hinged sides in vertical positions or to hold them at an adjusted angle, I provide a rod 17 which is of slightly less length than the distance between the vertical sides and which is provided at spaced intervals along its length with a series of integral eyes 18 designed for the reception of the angular extremity of a hook rod 19. The rod 19 is preferably substantially the same length as the rod 17. These two rods are hingedly connected to the inner faces of the hinged sides 6, as clearly illustrated in the drawmg.
From the foregoing description in con nection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved wagon bed will be apparent. When it is desired to hold the hinged sides at differentinclinations, this may be easily doneby adjusting the rods 17 and 19 in an evident manner. If desired, the extension sides may be swung outwardly until they rest upon the side brackets 20 that are secured to the outer faces of the main sides 1.
Having thus described this invention it is claimed:
In a wagon box, the combination, with the sides hinged to swing outwardly from a vertical to an inclined position, of a rod of slightly less length than the distance between the vertical sides, said rod provided at spaced intervals along its length with a series of integral eyes, said rod hingedly In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my mounted on one of the hinged sides, and a signature in the presence of two witnesses. hook of substantially the same len th as the rod hingedly mounted on the opposite LINOH T GRIFFIN hinged side to engage with any one of the WVitnesses:
eyes on the rod to support the sides in verti- J. P. GRIFFIN, cal position or at an adjusted angle.
GROVER BEL HER.
