CENTER-STAND FALL-LEAF TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1912.
Application filed April 11, 1912. Serial No. 690,004.
To all whom, 2'25 may concern.
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. Home, a citizen of the United States, residing at Car-mi, in the county of White and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Center-Stand Fall- Leaf Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to extension tables and has for its object the production of an efficient table, the outer portions of which may be entirely detached therefrom, when so desired.
Another object of this invention is the production of an efiicient latch supporting means for holding the extension leaves in an operative position.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical section through the table. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View of the table top showing the supporting standard in cross section. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the hinge structure for securing the leaves to the body of the table. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the design of the table leaves which may be used in connection with the present invention. Fig. 5 is still another embodiment showing a different design for the table leaves.
As will be seen by referring to the drawings, the table top is supported upon the standard 1 which standard is in turn carried by outwardly extending feet 2. A central table top 3 is carried, and fixedly secured to the top of the standard 1 and is preferably circular. A pair of transversely extending rails 4 are secured to the supporting standard 1, one rail being placed upon each side of the standard as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The outer ends of these standards are connected by means of a truss member 5. The truss member 5 is spaced from the under face of the top 3 of the table a suflicient distance to allow the supporting latch member 6 to pass therebetween. The supporting latch member 6 comprises an elongated body portion having an elongated slot 7, which slot 7 travels about the supporting screw 8, the supporting screw 8 having a washer 9 supported by the head thereof to allow the latch member 6 to have an easy sliding movement. The inner end of the latch member 7 is adapted to be slid between the truss member 5, and the top 3 of the table 1 holding the extension leaf 10 of the table in its correct position. This latch member 6 may be swung to the position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, so that the extension leaves 10 of the table may drop to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. It should, of course, be understood that the screw 8 is fixedly securedto the hinge or extension leaf of the table, and as the supporting latch member 6 is placed between the truss member 5 and the top 3 a very efficient means will be produced for supporting the extension leaves 10 in their correct position. Each of the extension leaves 10 of the table, as shown in Fig. 2, is provided with a reinforcing metallic cleat 12 near its ends for firmly bracing the table at the point where considerable strain Will take place upon the extension leaves 10.
The extension leaves 10 are preferably formed as illustrated in Fig. 2 of a semicircular structure having their ends abutting. A hinge journal 13 is carried by'each leaf 10 near each end thereof, and these hinge journals 13 are connected to a strap journal 14 by means of transversely extending pins 15. These pins 15 may be of any desired construction and are provided with enlarged heads 16 to limit the transverse movement of the pins through the hinge journals l3 and 1 1. It will be seen that through the medium of these pins and the hinge structure described and illustrated, the extension leaves of the table may be readily attached and detached from the head 3 of the table when so desired, and under ordinary conditions these hinge leaves 10 may be swung downwardly to the desired position shown in Fig. 1 when it is desired to place the table against the wall so as not to take up very much room. On the other hand where it is desired to use the table as a stand, the leaves 10 may be entirely removed from the body of the table without disfiguring the same, owing to the fact that the latch supporting members 6 may be withdrawn from under the truss members 5 and the hinge journals 13 may be detached from the pins 15 and the leaves in this mannor removed from the head of the table 3.
As illustrated in Figs. 4: and 5, the table may be of any convenient or desired shape so long as the center portion of the leaves are arranged to conveniently fit around the center portion of the table so that said leaves may be conveniently swung downwardly.
From the foregoing description, it will, therefore, be obvious that a very efficient and durable table has been produced, the leaves of which may be readily attached and detached from the central supporting portion thereof, and also that the leaves, when it is not desired to entirely detach the ame from the center portion of the table may be conveniently swung to such a position as to be out of the way and facilitate the placing of the table against the wall to accommodate a small amount of space.
What is claimed is A table of the class described comprising a support, a central head secured to said support, a plurality of leaves hingedly secured to said head, said head provided with transversely extending rails, truss members secured to the end of said rails and spaced from said head, thereby constituting a plurality of] pockets, latch members secured to the under face of said leaves, each of said latch members provided with a pointed inner end for facilitating the insertion of said latch members into said pockets, said latch members provided with elongated slots, pins carried by said leaves and working in said slots, and said latch members passing between said truss member and said head for holding said leaves in an operative position, said latch members when withdrawn from said pockets capable of being swung upon said pins for allowing said latch members to swing under said leaves for placing the same out of the way, said pins also acting as a centering means for facilitating the insertion of said latch members into said pockets, said transversely extending rails positioned on the opposite sides of said support and carried thereby.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
