Abstract

This invention provides an azo compound represented by the following formula (1) or salt thereof, (wherein the group A represents a substituted phenyl group, R1 represents (C1to C4) alkyl group, etc., R2 represents a cyano group, etc., R3 and R4 respectively independently represent sulfo group, etc., and R5 to R10 respectively independently represent sulfo group, etc.), and an ink composition containing such azo compound or salt. The azo compound of this invention exhibits a high solubility in a medium containing water as a main component, a high stability over a prolonged period of storage even in the state of a high concentration aqueous solution and an ink. The figures recorded with the ink provides a black color recorded image having a highly rich color and high strength, particularly against light and ozon gas. Therefore, the azo compound of this invention is suitable for use as a pigment for black ink.
