Abstract
A device for growing bacteria from an initial population to an ending population comprising: a vessel 1 containing e.g. in a frangible ampoule 2a supply of growth medium 3 capable of growing said bacteria from said beginning population to said ending population, said vessel containing an opening 10; means 4, 5 within said vessel for obtaining a known quantity of bacteria from at least one growth colony of said bacteria external of said vessel and for inoculating said growth medium; and removable means 11 for covering said opening in said vessel, for permitting said means for obtaining said bacteria to be removed to obtain said known quantity of bacteria from said colony of said bacteria external of said vessel, which bacteria are used to inoculate said medium, and for closing said vessel during the incubation of said inoculated medium. The sampling means 4, 5 consists of a wand 4 bearing a tapered groove 5. The covering means 11 may be pressure sensitive adhesive tape. <IMAGE>
