Abstract

The invention relates to non-ferrous metallurgy, in particular to processes for the production of metallic titanium and metallic titanium alloys by metallic reduction of titanium tetrachloride, as well as to installations for the production of metallic titanium or its alloys. The proposed method of producing metallic titanium and metallic titanium alloys is characterized in that the reduction reaction of titanium tetrachloride and the melting of the obtained porous titanium is carried out thermally using magnesium or its alloy electrode for reduction of titanium tetrachloride, whereby it is subjected to a vacuum or a protected atmosphere by a suitable arc. in an oven, using an electron beam, or a plasma arc, or laser radiation. The proposed apparatus for carrying out said process is characterized in that Mg or its alloys are used to reduce titanium tetrachloride in a vacuum or in a protective atmosphere. The casing of the electric arc furnace (1), which is in fact a cooled crystallizer (2), is connected to a vacuum pump (14) and is equipped with usable or non-usable electrodes (18) made of titanium or titanium alloy. The apparatus is also equipped with: a towing device (15) for making a rod (9) from an obtained titanium or titanium alloy, which allows changing the volume of the reaction zone (3) in the crystallizer (2); said electrode dispensing device (4), which, by means of control apparatus, by means of a three-phase AC power source for generating an electric arc, allows the required length of the arc space to be maintained depending on the liquid metal level in the bath and to regulate the arc power. Alternatively, the same effect can be achieved by using two single-phase alternating current sources connected to an open triangle circuit as well as two or more electrodes (18) to generate an electric arc. Also, when using DC power, you can not only achieve this effect, but also maintain the polarity.
