Abstract
1479204 Continuous casting MICHELIN ET CIE (COMPAGNIE GENERALE DES ETABS MICHELIN) 22 May 1974 [22 May 1973] 22959/74 Heading B3F Material 2, such as steel, kept liquid, or melted, in a crucible 1, is extruded through a die 3 in a carrier 4, Fig. 1, by pressure in a chamber 6, e.g. caused by introduction of gas through an inlet 7 to pass as a jet 12 into a chamber 14, for solidification in a cooling medium such as a gas, to form wire, filament or fibres; a fluidimpervious packing 20 is situated between the crucible 1 and the die carrier 4 and a cool region 8, e.g. cooled by liquid-circulation in a duct 10, has a heat-conductive connection with the material 2 by way of the packing 20 so that a seal 60, Fig. 6, of solidified material forms between the crucible 1 and die carrier 4. A resilient, metal/plastics or metallic seal 23 or a glued, welded or brazed joint is arranged between the cool region 8 and the packing 20 or chamber 6. The material of the packing 20 may be the same as that of the extruded metal or one of its main elements or be SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , silicate, beryllia, or BN; it may be reinforced. The die 3 may have more than one orifice 13 and the downwardly directed jet 12 need not be vertical. During melting, a vacuum may be established in the pressure chamber 6. In another embodiment, the packing is in the form of an inverted cup so that its base covers the die 3 until the material to be extruded is melted, but is melted or dissolved or yields under pressure to unmask the die orifice when the material melts. As shown in Fig. 6, an agglomeration 60 solidifies at the top of the remaining cylindrical part of the packing 35 to seal the gap 63 betweenthe crucible 1 and the die carrier. In other embodiments, the packing is of flat sheet form and of upturned dish-shape, respectively, It may be of truncated cone, possibly closed at one end and flanged, or be of flat ring. In yet another embodiment, the layer 20 and the cool region are integral with the pressure chamber 6.
