Abstract
1323752 Continuous casting A WERTLI 30 July 1970 [8 Aug 1969] 36980/70 Heading B3F A mould 1 surrounded by a cooling jacket 4 contains a partly hollow mandrel 2 whose wall thickness diminishes in the direction of withdrawal of a tube 8 cast from iron, copper or copper alloys from a (holding) furnace 3 in the wall of which the mould 1 is mounted and the mandrel hollow has a concave inner end surface. The outer surface of the mandrel 2 is slightly tapered. The mandrel may contain a reinforcing rib X or disc Y. It has a threaded connection with the mould 1 or is connected to the mould by an end flange 7 fitting in a recess in the mould and having openings 11 for the melt flow from the furnace. The material of the mould and mandrel are non-wettable by the molt. Inert gas or liquid is passed through a duct 16 into the mandrel to cool it. Coolant 13 such as water, controlled by an ultrasonic device which determines the position of the solid/liquid phase boundary of the melt (in a solidification area A) or by electrical signals from temperature sensors 12, passes into the mould jacket 4 and is sprayed on to the emerging cast tube 8.
