Abstract
1,131,624. Casting processes; continuous casting. SCHLOEMANN A.G. 9 Feb., 1966 [9 March, 1965], No. 5633/66. Heading B3F. To increase pouring speed of molten metal for casting, particularly continuous casting, it is cooled to remove superheat, before or during its entry into the mould 2 by passage through a member 1 made of graphite or silicon carbide and surrounded by a cooling jacket 6 or cooling coil (7). The passageway through the member 1 is rectangular or elliptical in section and there may be more than one passageway. A flange extension 3 around the outlet screens the surface of the metal in the mould 1; it makes airtight contact with the mould wall or there is an atmosphere of protective gas at that region to prevent oxidation. A thermo-couple 11 at the outlet continuously measures the temperature so that it can be regulated by controlling the speed of pouring and/or the cooling rate. The pouring speed may be regulated by gas pressure on the melt surface in the pouring vessel.
