Abstract

method of manufacturing potassium sulphate (K2SO4) suitable for use in the production of composite fertilisers. In contrast with the classical methods, this method:* Instead of using sulphuric acid to attack potassium chloride, makes use of a combination of sulphuric and pyrosulphuric acid (oleum), which helps to restrict the corrosion and consequently the maintenance cost of the equipment.* Conducts the reaction in two stages, i.e. it makes use of a mixer in the first stage and a revolving metal furnace in the second stage of the reaction. The reactants are heated in the furnace in direct contact with and flowing in the opposite direction to hot combustion gases.* Makes use of a recycled product which acts as a carrier for the reactants and ensures their smooth distribution inside the furnace.Furthermore, under the appropriate operating conditions and without any additional granulation equipment, it produces a granular product which can be sold as a complete fertiliser withthe physical properties of common granular fertilisers.
